Floor tiling

Starting floor tiling today, could use advice best way to do it.
Floor is concrete covered in bitumen, with the old lino and vinyl tiles removed

Bought a 20kg bag of leveling cement (Mapei, from b&q). I am assuming I dont need to remove the bitumen?
When our kitchen was done, they used a latex floor leveler, but not seen that for sale anywhere.
Floor tiles are 1.2 x 0.2m each, if that matters.

This room is under 2m², but will also be doing the hall after, about 16m² as a rough guess.

I've scored through the bitumen in the past to help get a key to the substrate.

Does it actually need leveling ?

might not need leveling but it would be nicer to work /lay ties on tho...
really depends how free of bumps it is......
perhaps a decent heavy paint scraper might get the groutlines clean.....
but it needs to be preety smooth...
saying that if u use the deeper grout trowel u'll be OK after scraping....
also is there any loose parts to the bitu.....esp around the door holes...

I think its level enough that any difference can be taken up by the adhesive. No loose bitumen but there is some adhesive and dust on top to remove
Im mostly unsure if either will stick well to the bitumen or if it needs to come off, or primed with something first. This leveler packet mentions using SBR liquid rubber as primer.

I always sbr. Modified PVA. Most places will have it. Sweep up well. Get all the dust gone then sbr. Let it dry fully before tiling.

Just to check. Your using self mix out of a bag not adhisive out of a tub?

you can coat it with sbr bonding agent 1st that sticks like sh,,,,it to a blanket and a good all rounder sealant on concrete and plaster or brickwork

Genuinely interested. What puts you off tiling onto the concrete

Would you still self level if you were using a decoupling mat?

no problem tiling on concrete its solid. best to screed with 2part laytex if its got bitumen over it to make a good bond

Lol. But your bonding the leveler to the bitumen. May as well lose a step and save height buildup

Always use self leveller before tiling... it takes out most of the variation in the floor and makes it easier to tile.

Use sbr primer or a leveller designed to go over adhesive, it improves your chances of things not coming apart .

Floor tiling is an expensive job, no point in cutting corners unless you like a mess

I layed a solid oak floor over screed years ago using Mapei Lignabond and it stuck very very well EXCEPT on the old hallway that was covered in bitumen!
I didn't put any kind of SBR down though.

my floor had that bitumen on, I used SBR and Blue circle Portland cement as a sealer/ levelling compound. mix it up runnier than it says on the back of the cement in a flexible builders bucket with a whisk in a drill on a slow speed. you need to help it along with a float or a spiked roller when putting it down, I used a plasters trowel but I wish id cobbled up a roller. mask up your skirting boards and plan/ work quick. if you need more than 1 batch then get a helper to mix it whilst your pouring the first one down.

the 1st coat on a damp wall is coated with a slurry mix of sbr and Portland cement to give a good bond before the following coats of tanking slurry are applied excellent stuff and pretty cheap per gallon . goes a long way
