There doesn't seem to be any play in the quill so the bearings might be ok, but I won't know for sure until I get a motor on it. I would like to do a nice paint job on it, maybe trying to match the original colour. I was quoted £87 to rechrome the clamp handles so I think I will just strip and polish them. The monkey holes I thought I would fill with JB Weld .

I had an issue with 'notchiness' in the downfeed; the quill has a machined slot along it in which runs a key formed as part of the drive pulley and I guess years of people ramming the drill into the work and stalling the spindle has forced the key to damage the slot. Tickled it with a file to remove the burrs and it's better, but equally the 'key' is damaged so it'll never be perfect. The key seemed to be cast-in to the pulley, not separate as far as I could tell.

£87 for chrome i'd want gold plating for that. mine are not chromed anyway just give them a good rub on a wire wheel they come up like new. mine has some monkey holes but they were very shallow so i skimmed the table on the mill got rid of most of them. the one i'm doing at the moment is a floor mounted and has a slightly larger table which i've plated up. i know them inside out so if you get stuck give me a shout

when you get a piece of used machinery you have no idea of it's history so it's good to strip it down give it a good looking at and lubricate it i've found all kinds of gremlins that would have no doubt failed when i first used it. clean and tidy well adjusted and lubricated workhorse

Sometimes i wonder, i was looking at rapidor hacksaws online, painted up like a 20 doller hoor most of them were. Priced ridiculosly.

Give the chrome parts a rub down with aluminium foil. It will polish it up and remove some of the rust etc. Just don't rub the chrome off.

I had forgotten that trick from the days when cars had pimply chrome bumpers but I think this plating is too far gone.
I have the drill completely stripped down except I don't have a thin enough socket to undo the bolts holding the column to the base. Now looking to strip the old paint - should I buy a bucket of methylene chloride or take the lot to the nearest sandblasters?
The 3 phase motor that came with it turned out to be a dud so I am still looking for a reasonably priced single phase unit.

Burdekin is right. the castings are filled to make them look reasonably smooth. blasting them will just reveal all the inperfections. better to just degrease them and give them a rub down. The one in my previous pic was just rubbed down. just give the castings a scrub with washing up liquid and hot water. use a bucket the missus will go ape if she see's them in the bath

I refurbed mine and its mint it got a few coats of hammerite sprayed on that I got cheap . its dark blue

My dad used to respray cars for people at home and as part of the service he'd polish up all the brightwork. In order to cut paint back he'd bought a tub of some industrial cutting compound that turned out to be so coarse it would rip off all the paint he'd just put on... but it was perfect for cleaning chrome! I wouldn't be at all surprised if the remnants of that tub are still kicking around in his garage, must have a tidy out one day...

At the moment it's totally dismantled and I am rubbing down the old paintwork between other jobs. It's been a busy week, what with repairing the lawn mowers ready for the season, fixing the dent I put in the wife's car and loading ammo for the western shooting season. On top of that I got another order for a bunch of copper poppies.
I'm surprised that none of the motor suppliers I contacted about a replacement motor have got back to me yet. Still looking for a paint to match the original - at present it looks like "Myford lathe rich cream" from Paragon might be ok.
I will put up some photos when I have made some progress.

i never bother about original colour but i know some do. that myford cream must be the colour they paint between the bed?. the one in the pic was painter with rustoleum enamel i've got a big tin so everything gets it. i've just finished a floor mounted one. the last one i'm doing (honest) The one thing i don't like about fobco's is the handle with the sliding (T) bar. it always seems to be in the wrong place for me so i've made a three spoke handle. i find it easier to use as i've a bad right arm here's a pic the silver is powder coat
