Ford Transit Vans

Looking at getting a MK7 Transit Van, But don't have a great wealth of experience with them!

So my question is front wheel drive or rear wheel drive?

2.2 or 2.4 engine?

I'm not looking at carrying massively heavy stuff round in it, So don't need a high payload

We have had both in the past last 2.2 was a 10 plate all in fwd don't get stuck in the mud and snow as much, only major problem we had was a injector failed and trashed the pump. Cost 1400 quid to fix using 2nd hand parts
But all in all we did over 25k a year with then often pulling a ton on a trailer without many issues

Yeah I've heard about injector problems, Also heard about injection problems causing piston failure also. I'm going to buy one with good service history & low mileage

We had the one that failed from new and had done around 100k ish

Front wheel drive is much more refined, the rear wheel drives are slow and use a lot more fuel.

Rear wheel drive are heavier when the same size, and can carry more than fwd if you need the capacity.

As above. rear twin for me as im always loaded but for light use fwd. Cant comment on the more recent engines.

Make sure you listen for any diesel knock as leaky injectors are killing pistons.
Turbos are quite common especially electin controlled ones.
6sp boxes can be troublesome but 95% of the time also.

As above posts..... If you need length then it probably going to be rwd, if it's standard length then fed

Nothing much to chose re reliability or economy. Al, rust badly after about 5 to 6 years

If you just need a standard size van then the other brands are worth a look... transit custom is supposed to be a good van

Imo it's worth taking an extended warranty at least for major mechanicals and turbo, vans seem to be les reliable than cars,

Personally I find the 2.2 to be adequate, but I don't expect my van to be fast

That's what the bike shop uses for deliveries, spot on for bikes you don't crack your scone all the time

Buy a sprinter mate , I've had both and you just can't keep up with the rust on a transit.
And imo the sprinter is a better van and just cruises down the motorway.

Torn between a sprinter and iveco ATM.

Iveco are proper old school tractors,
Sprinter any day of the week.

Even the sprinters are a pain for rust, just not Transit levels.

Yeah I've seen some rusty sprinters/crafters on the roads. All vehicles eventually rust if not looked after!

How much are you looking at spending??

As seems your a tech would almost look at rebuilding a dead one to save yourself a couple of quid.

Had a spell of looking for a V6 TDI Vito a while back but could,nt find one for sensible money as they are very expensive and the Brabus model is in another universe price wise
