Yes I posted that here: #2,707
and then decided to print my own.
Its the sort of thing that when you see it - you just have to have one - but when you have it, it would sit in your workshop and you would never use it. I mean, what would you actually use it for - that couldn't be accommodated by what you already have?

That's such a clever design. I've had to mess around enough times over the years trying to clamp irregular objects in my vice, that would have been handy many a time. I'm trying to resist the urge to buy more tools these days, but if one came along at the right price I dare say I'd bag it!

Nice design but quite complex and I could see it getting choked up quite easily.
Matrix pin style ones are a modern equivalent, basically lots of pins in a jaw that act hydraulically, as one pin gets pushed in others get forced out.
For me though, seeing as I have a CNC, then milling soft jaws to shape is often the easiest way.

I was just interested in the concept and Sketchup has the ability to make a "component" which means self similar shapes can be copied (and scaled) infinitely often by just making one single seed component.
There are issues though with the dovetail and clearances required for 3D printing. Unsolved as yet. Sketchup is not parametric.
Having investigated the design of this vice, I suspect the original version would cost thousands to produce with the required accuracy. Good luck finding one of those!

It is still virtual. Lots of parts, each scale needs additional clearance for print in place. Dovetails do not scale easily since each smaller part still needs to be the same height etc.

I havent got a fractual vice but I have some thing similar with movable jaws I find handy made by Soba the one in the middle.

Nominally “similar” in that it has a movable swinging jaw insert. The difference is night and day with a trunnion bearing though. I did consider the idea of trying to make a “similar” type of insert with regular pivoted jaws but it absolutely does have to be a set of nested trunnions.
My main interest is not having any sort of requirement, I just want to feel how it operates. It looks incredibly cool too which helps.
