There is a thread here that describes what the clutch does - if it is correct, it is an adjustable safety clutch that should slip when the tap is overloaded. Says it should be unlubricated.

You might be able to select the material to cater for the tap sizes you want to use in the head: something closely approaching the original if you want to use it over its full capacity range; something less grippy if you only want to use it for tiny taps.

We used to use Klingersil as clutch lining on Radio controlled helicopters. The blue stuff. Worked very well

It would not touch the bore so I left it, did not want to blunt it! just need to find itI'll pay you a visit in the not too distant, Pat. Have you used my MT3 reamer yet?

Great links Agro. None of my searches have turned up the instructions or red fibre sheet. But then I didn't search using that string

Thanks Gaz. I'd found three of those links. The PDF is not the same model, unfortunately. But the discussion in the 2014 ME posting was interesting to read. I'm going to give KAL a call today, and if I draw a blank there I'll try Nuttall.
