The grid was an alternate series of wires and it did hang about on the board for a while, it certainly bridged the phase and neutral - it just didn't shock.

Westinghouse made a device called a hot axle box detector, used to protect main railway junctions back in the late seventies. Although by modern standards they are very simple but at the time they were quite high technolgy. The optical detector was in a fibreglass shelter close to the running line and it was temperature controlled. Out in the wilds they were warm havens for all manner of wildlife which would often die as a result of their desire to keep warm.. always a pleasant job cleaning them out.

Certainly 600V dc was enough to do for them as they very often succumbed to that on the busbars. In fact call outs for that type of failure paid for at least one of my cars :-) Rodent protection for cables was often brass tape armour, not intended to stop the mice chewing through but to slice their mouths when they did..

The place I was working at last year was out on a farm in a long shed, and a mouse ran up along the bench and down the other end! I asked the woman there if they had any traps and she gave me three of those little plastic spring ones, and some peanut butter. I kid you not the things snapped seven times that day and at least twice a day for a week after, the place was infested til I came along

I was doing some solar and genset work on a newbuild. Electricians had gone home and we were expecting the owner. Pool house kept tripping out, so I had a look. After a few boxes opened showed nothing, the one where the conduit arrived from the main house had a couple of big mice in it. They had crawled all the way from the basement and found nirvana on the terminals.
