A trainee pilot crashing to the earth isnt exactly the same as a new welder getting porosity now is it.assuming he isnt welding structural etc without testing.
i did hear some of the 9/11 terrorists trained on simulators though.swings and roundabouts.

Thanks for making the point of what can be achieved using virtual anything. Obviously 9/11 filth, fast tracked, as putting down aircraft on tarmac, was not necessary.

I happened to mention to our head office that my abrasive wheels ticket was coming up for renewal to be told they're no longer sending anyone on the practical, refresher courses as it can all be done online sitting in front of the pc via Human Focus!

I visited a nautical college, recently. There was a virtual Bridge, where the simulated tanker was berthed, ballasted, etc. Crane driver train on virtual programs, prior to get let loose on the real thing.

It is the way it is now. Lots of CPD all done peering into a pc.

I don't see the problem myself, as said above pilots use it to great effect and have done for years. Ok it'll Never replace the real thing but it allows for more time practicing.

I think one of the things often suggested to novice tig welders is to feed filler rod between your fingers whilst watching TV to get the feel of, is this not the same thing but you are able to practice torch angle, maintain the arc gap and practice your travel speed?

I watch Sheffield Wednesday (I know) so I sometimes look on a facebook page of other Wednesdayites......yeah yeah yeah both of us.

People are constantly posting we should by him or him or him sometimes justifying their choice by quoting his performances on Football Manager (never seen it but Im told its a football simulator for the computer)

I suppose FM isnt as realistic as a Virtual Welder (ones 100 quid the others 10000 quid). Much the same as an Flight Simulator is probably 10 million quid.

So next Chelsea manager could be someone who has bought Football Manager (assuming Mourinho doesnt start winning)

You could argue what you are practicing in football manager though is more the skills of a talent scout, not a "football manager" in the real sense. Whereas with the virtual welder you are practicing (at least some) of the skills you would use in real welding ie travel speed, arc gap etc.

I agree it's not a substitute for real welding but I can certainly see how it would be a useful aid.

Whether it's worth the money is another question, again for colleges it may well be a worthwhile investment?

The other flaw comparing to flight simulators are that you get some very real feedback from the flight simulator, the cock pit is full size and uses a real life example of the controls and buttons etc, with the aid of the pneumatics you can "feel" the rolls and elivations etc I imagine most flight simulators people are thinking about are the proper ones not like the Microsoft PC version with a generic joystick and pressing the space bar to put the landing gear down! Another flaw is that someone who only ever flew a proper simulator to a high standard wouldnt be that far off having to able to land the real thing, such are the skills and simerlarities between the two, but you can be mustard on a welding simulator but still be a million miles away from being able to put down a good weld simply because they are not "real" enough. Who knows maybe in another 5 years......

I personally don't think that they could teach anyone anything that you couldn't show them for real with about two hours of intense tutelage. But I can see the merit for big establishments if you look at the consumable savings even if it saved this two hours or so multiplied by all of the students across all of the weeks and years.

Myself and others, were the reverse, sheite on the simulator. Never the less, it was a useful day to view and try the technology first hand.
