Kit has to be CE marked and approved.

Much of the American PPE kit isn’t CE approved hence it’s not allowed to be used over here.

With the type of lid mentioned in the OP, they are not common here, infact I’ve never seen one, hence suggesting they may not be CE approved

Worked with a yank once named “Eagle” - yup that was his actual name. He had a Stetson hard hat and steel toe redwing cowboy boots

I own some steel toed, electically insulating, oil resistant, cowboy boots - boought 'em in the US when I used to wear normal cowboy boots all the time (narrow feet and using cars with narrow footwells (Caterham) meant they were very comfortable). Bought from a boot store in Ohio selling working boots.

I never wore them in that job and they sat in the cupboard. Until we got a new H&S woman at work - rules changed and my usual company supplied boot dropped off the allowed list - so as the cowboy boots are fully compliant, I wear them now instead

If you think about, they are sensible - if you are working with cattle using horses, as many still seem to over there, then you need a suitable boot, and one that protects your feet when a sod ding heavy cow stands on you!

Is the JSP one acceptable in the UK/EU? It says it’s to EN397, but no mention of CE marking?

I’ve got one of their ordinary hats but it’s not the best fit - sits too high on my big head and there’s no adjustment for the webbing inside. I need to find something that fits better as I use mine all the time - I have mounted ear defenders and a visor so popping it on makes sure I have all the PPE (apart from a mask) to go.

Just thought after i hit post, but I like the optime 3's but found the ones with the wire round your neck work better than the over the head ones. Have you tried them? You could wear them with a wide brim hat. I think a lot depends on head shape

Deckie vs engine arguments havent changed they are all still deep sea cheufers and all they do all day is count seagulls.

The round you neck band ones are as rare as hens teeth in my company only ever seen them on one ship and even then they only had one pair.

The hard hat, no hard hat debate, it all depends of what side of the argument you are on. Having been on both sides, I get the argument for not wearing them in an engineroom, or on road works for example.

So in an engine room on your own or with one oiler, risk is minimal, but at some point when you are the accountable person, you need to put to one side " they will use common sense and wear a bash hat when necessary" thoughts.

In reality when accountable, the only way to make sure hard hats are worn when required, is to make them mandatory, same with safety glasses at all times.

Big companies tend to have one big set of rules for HSE stuff, so if its an arctic company, you may end up being forced to wear thermal stuff in the tropics because the rules were written for a cold place, by people in a cold place. Its hard to alter the rules in the big corporate machine, but it can be done if you push hard enough with a positive argument.

Yeah me and one of the chiefs i sailed with recently tried this. We tried to make a case for actively teaching people through a course or computer course (seagull) and onboard training to use locking wire properly and supplying locking wire pliers to each ship and appropriate wire after i found 12 generator fuel pumps with erosion plugs incorrectly secured or someone hasnt even bothered to put it on in the first place. Even using the classic uk cadet example of how much could have been saved by refferencing the lessons learned video from the oasis of the seas (you will note if you watch it they still havent learned thier lesson there is no locking wire on the errosion plug of the generator fuel pump). Got nothing back from the company but hey ho thier loss.

I was looking at the wire ones the other day funny enough. It was either in Highland Industrial Supplies or MacGregors, cant remember which but they were £14 which I thought was a bargain

At work you can only do so much to improve things. But as long as you suggested the improvment, youve done your bit. If they as in your employers dont take it up, as you say their problem, dont loose sleep over it.

You can take a horse to water, but cant make it drink.

I used to work for a large corporation, there was a procedure for everything. And an expectation to work to it. So some very clever people came up with a global planning process. With gates to make, to allow a job to progress through the system. Im sure it worked in the US where it was written, but in Angola it didnt. The jobs still needed to get done, so things came through the plan that just were not ready.....you know basics like the vendor couldnt travel as he didnt have a visa. The materials were stuck in customs....planning basics. So we failed miserably to meet the planning KPis.

Now trying to get 4 lines of text added to a global procedure is like trying to shovel a runny curry bum up hill with a garden fork. Eventually after much networking, and frustration after 18 months I managed to get the change made. Was it worth it? To me it was as the process worked, but from a career perspective, when I changed jobs returning to the UK, my new bosses boss, told me Id been labeled to stubborn ( pig headed in his words) as Id kept pushing to get the change made.

All irrelevant now as at the end of the day no matter how much you bang your head off a wall at work, your just a number to make other numbers on a balance sheet work. I resigned to go back to sunnier climbs, then decided to bother. Do I miss it, nope apart from the pay check!

You have my sypathy, I spend 3 months a year like a cooked prawn and the rest like a sick gost, The top is still red but the beard is white like my bum. I spent almost all my working life at sea, mostly deep sea fishing and oil rig safety/supply last 16 years skipper.
What a contrast in safety rules and regs between them both, fishing not enough and oil industry far over the top in my opinion to the point you need 4 to do a 1 man job. I once went 2nd mate on a oil rig safety vessel, it was smallish to do month on month off and the hydraulic oil tank was not big enough to hold all the oil we needed for a trip so we had 10 45gallon drums lashed to the rails on the small makeshift helipad. About 20 days into the trip we hit some very bad weather NW of shetlandsand one of the barrils started to work loose and eventualld did, rolling from side to side it started bashing the fixed ones an punctured at least 1, It was my watch and I told the watchmate to go call the skipper and left the otherone on the wheel(autopilot couldn't cope) and i went out on the deck with some lashings, using the roll of the ship i managed to get everything battened down and only 1 drum busted.
When i got back to the bridge the skipper put me on report, no wet gear, no life jacket, no hard hat, no safety harness,(lines were rigged to clip onto) the full 9 yards in the logbook and mentioned it in a daily message to HQ and said I would be docked a weeks pay.
We ended up doing 38 days instead of 30, and could only have done it because the oil was saved. When we signed of the log in front of the Captain and owner, the owner said sorry but had to dock me a weeks wages(to keep the skipper happy) and gave me an envelope with £500 in it and thanked me in a wisper. The next trip I went back first mate with a new skipper, that was about 30 odd years ago, 500 quid was a lot of money then.
Looking back I could have just let things happen and nothing would have been said, or rigged everything by the book and went on deck to tie up empty drums. I agree fully with safety gear but sometimes it hinders getting the job done and is not practical as an across the board set of rules and regs made up in a boatd room. Every ship/factiry/workplace should have its own set made accordingly.

sorry for the book, its nice to bring back memories when you get old.
