I used to work on a farm where it was drummed into me to be careful when doing exactly that, welding hinges in bedded cattle yards. They'd had the place on fire many years previously (not sure why), I always soaked the whole area with water before working and had buckets to hand, then throw some more around afterwards for good measure. Still do that now if there's any doubt.

Put a bucket of water over a dried up flower bed just yesterday after raking it through with another on hand if. Only yesterday in fact it's a smart ish move when you cannot do better but I would not like to try with lots of straw thar could / should be cleared personally

Well whenever I have to weld in yards with cattle in the straw isn't clean, fresh and dry - it's a question of how much s*** is in it and so how burnable it will or won't be. Sometimes it's almost solid excrement with the dry straw long gone, other times it's not been down long and so at risk.

We had a small fire once next to a muck heap on the farm and it set fire to the muck. Took ages to put out.

And there was alot of cow poo in it, not nice clean straw.

Oh yes, when conditions are right for it muck heaps can slowly burn for a long time.

Some people in the UK make their own logs using a mixture of sawdust, pulped paper, and cow muck.
