G Clamps...

I have a set of the Aldi F clamps, think they were £10 for 4 sizes and in all honesty they are amazing quality for the price, they have had a fairly hard hobby life for the last 3 years and still as good as new...I can't fault them.

I think a lot of the clamps that fail are really wood workers clamps, rather than clamps for fabrication work. They are just not up to the stresses involved. I bought a few Babco G-clamps and they seem heavier than the record ones in construction.

Ditto that.
I've got a pair of them that were sold as as a really unmatched set, one about 300mm the other about 800mm. I've been meaning to get another pair to match them up and have two pairs the same. I wasn't expecting much of them for a cheap clamp, but they're invaluable and stood up to all sorts.

Now, if you where to visit my mates joinery shop you might think otherwise..
However welders for some strange reason have always underused clamps or abused clamps to do jobs way beyond thier capacity or design peramiter.

A small selection I keep over the bench, also got about 20+ modified f clamps that work into the 16mm holes on my bench. I can actually set up very complex frames flat and square before ever placing the first tack - very useful and can get tollarances way down. I thought I had a photo of this fancy contempary gate being set up but it must have gone straight to my inststagram.. But if you have ever made something similar you will know how badly a little bit out could conspire... In fact there is a modified f clamp in the lower left corner holding the gate up
