I keep a painted house brick in the 'fridge to keep elephants away. It clearly works as I have never found footprints in the butter.

Consult the Internet, which will probably suggest a colour change on the brick, so that the elephants can see it more clearly.

Yes, the same myth works for sprayers too (apparently). I know that education has been dumbed down, but Primary school Human biology tells us where the respiratory and digestive system stop being commoned.** You can excuse some of the yanks, they still believe in Virgin birth but normal and educated people?

I’d be interested to know what sort of respirator you were using?

You should really have a PAPR for welding (basically, a powered filter blowing into your hood) and definitely for welding galv. Zinc fume in lungs is not great, as you’ve found out!

Same at my old workplace – used to have a team of lead burners for melting and casting lead, and welding lead flashings on chemical baths. They all got a free pint of milk a day, and that continued right up until we stopped burning lead on-site in around 2013-2014, around that time.

The bloodstream is the common denominator here. Substances in the bloodstream can diffuse into the gut. It's not a one-way process, unless a substance is being actively transported, so milk present in the gut could adsorb and dilute toxins, though they could equally be reabsorbed again. It's not a simple black and white process.

Similar at the foundry in the 70's, the company had to supply milk to those working on the casting track.

Agreed, but he is clutching at straws as we both know. I am astonished at the lack of basic anatomy knowledge out there.

You need to explain it because your opinion is at odds with the way that the Human body is plumbed. There is no connection between the respiratory system and the digestive system past the back of the tongue, so I am still waiting to find out how putting anything in the digestive tract will protect the respiratory system from airborne pollutants? If I am missing something, then I am anxious to be put right, with scientific facts rather than "It's always been done that way".

Hah. It was a requirement in the Good Old Days of the NHS that gimmers could get a bottle of stout a day. The usual poison was Mackeson's in the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

I got a dose of galv fume fever about ten years ago, it wasn't pleasant at all. I thought I'd ground off the galv, but not enough, obviously.

Hope you're feeling better by now! I have welded galv a few times in the last month or so. I do my best to grind it off but it seems that it kinda coats the grinding discs and gets spread around in a thin film even though it looks like you've ground it off. I've even had the fumes forming snow like material in the air and occasionally burning with what looked like a green ish flame (might have been another colour, was viewing through my welding mask).
I make sure I'm clean shaven and wear a compact moldex abek 1 P3 mask under my welding visor and I don't smell anything or get any metal fume fever at all.
