gas bottle any advise emptying??

hi guys im wanting to have ago at making a stove out of a old 15kg
bottle
i no its maybe abit small but if i make a good job of it then am gonna make one with a 47kg bottle
a problem i have it emptying the reaming gas out it
it is not one with a tap on
its that type you fit a push fitment on
i stuck i screw driver in to deprerss the value and let the gas out but there was only a little bit but when i shake the bottle i can hear it inside i then turned the bottle upside down and depressed the value and got around a pint of liquid out
i was now thinking of removeing the screw in value with a spanner has any one got any advise on what i should do before i do this and before i take the sthyl saw to it i dont want to be landing on the other side of the street lol

just be careful!!! as a mate of mine cut in with a metal cutting circular saw to a bottle there was no gas left in it or not under preasure any way. It created a 2 foot high fireball and was lucky to get away with no eyebrows and fringe also some minor hand and arm burns. (A 47 kg propane bottle)

Hi. I have emptied and made burners from loads of bottles. You must not cut into them until all the gas is out. Remove the valve using a spanner or knocking it round with a drift. Sometimes it is hard but it has to come out. Then fill it with water. You will see and smell the gas coming out. I leave mine for a couple of days then empty and cut in safety. I really think you could risk serious harm if you don't do this first.

when you have removed the tap which will be very very tight turn the bottle upside down if its lpg or propane and it will drain out whats left of the liquid gas

That's exactly how you should do it, I've cut up a lot of them and this is how I do it

thanks for all your advise guys i have made a start on removeing the value with a spanner i have moved it about a inch but the metal part u use to pick it up is gettimg in the way of making a full turn is it safe to cut this part off so i can get a full turn with the spanner also if theres any gas left in will it drain out slowley as i remove the value or will the value shoot off with a large woooshhh ??

I cut the guard off mine, obviously keeping the valve closed! Took the thing outside opened the valve until there was no gas escaping, closed the valve again and took the valve out. Filled it with water, left it for a day and cut the boy open!

If you think there's gas still in it then DO NOT remove the valve!!!
Make sure ALL the pressure has been removed first.

Quite frankly, there's some idiotic suggestions in this thread. This topic has been discussed many times and a forum search will point you towards those threads.

so once filled with water left to stand and tiped out it should be safe to cut open

if your going to cut it with a petrol stihl saw leave it filled with water and cut away whilst its full if u feel uneasy doing the 1st cuts when its empty

I did one the other day for a stove to keep warm, a butane bottle but once I had the valve removed I filled it with snow and got to work with the grinder. If anyone wants some snow the 12inches of it round back.
