This has been a revelation for me. I'd honestly not buy another angle grinder for myself without variable speed. Grinding, flap discing, deburring, paint stripping, wire wheeling - you name it.

I run fibre discs on lowest speed - so 3,000rpm. That corded Erbauer sounds ideal for the job perfect for fibre wheels and soft wire brushes.

I'm pretty sure that's the same one I use (the Makita). It's a lovely thing to use, although I still use my Bosch mains one (which isn't variable speed) when I've got lots of flap discing / grinding to do - saves changing batteries and it's a lot lighter than the Makita. I've also got an ancient Makita mains one (which is REALLY heavy) that I inherited; I just use that one with a diamond disc (a bit like this one) for tungsten sharpening.

nice weld! did you let the rod flat on the root or angled 90° with the tungsten axis?

It was flat along the joint. The gap was an accident really due to the dish shape I was making from segments.

Another tip I was told (I can't remember by whom, sorry!) when I was starting out was to cut the filler rod in half. When you're doing loads and loads of welding, it's a bit wasteful in rods (as you get two stub ends that you have to throw away), but for a beginner it makes it a lot more manageable. I still do this when I'm doing little bits of welding and only use the full metre lengths when I've got loads to do. That only applies to steel; if you're welding aluminium you go through a lot of rod very quickly!
