The technique for coating an ally rod is called tufting, best to clean the rod before you start, a stainless wirewool is ideal, then heat the rod and dip it in the dry flux, it will pick up a tuft of flux, then hold it so the end is pointing upwards and gently heat the rod and flux with the flame (careful not to melt the rod) till it melts and flows down the rod, it done properly it will coat the rod with a clear layer of flux that looks like varnish on the rod. you can also do this if you are using strips of parent material as filler.
