Gate for my cousin

Hav'nt been here for a while, place looks the same. Last few days spent making a gate for my cousin, yep, you can tell by the house name she lives in Scotland. Ready for paint.

How do you mean properly? The tight centre first turn? I have seen and done many finishes but never knew there were proper and In proper scrolls

Although I am no longer a scroll fan, those scrolls are excellent, really like the tightly scrolled ends.

It's interesting what people like. I just do what I like or fancy on the job. Will have to do some samples of different finishes to show clients to choose- might be s good value added feature

Quite agree. I'm not a lover of them on some things but they are a very nice job.

Don't you think they are good.

You know if I was to choose my favourite it would be a snub end on a rectangular bar
But it isn't always right for the job

That's what I did, made a dozen 'half gates' and kept them in the van to show customers, often people don't know what they want until they are shown something different.

I did it because if I was to hear the words 'just put some nice scrolls in it' one more time I would have been locked up for murder.

It also made it easier to sell more costly gates, they understood why they cost more because they could see the work and weight in real life.

Used to make them by the thousands years ago, of late before I packed in I bought in, such a good range at decent prices it was not worth the hassle.

FH Brundle sell some nice scrolls , I only do the odd few to match existing or on handrail material to finish off ,

made a few jigs in my time

The problem with buying in is std scrolls although cheap off the peg cannot be sized to the job
The other thing is your work looks just like everyone else's

I carry three different railing samples made up 18 " x 24". I use it to 1. Show the quality 2 find were they fit price wise 3 to get near what they want

I plan to extend this of course and refine what I carry

It sold me a 4 k job just the other week 50 % of that was they saw something different that they liked. This is the sample they saw
