Geotextile membrane, Terram, ground control fabric etc.

I have in the past used some left over HiVis orange Terram 1000 fabric, but I'm now in the position to need to purchase a roll of suitable similar material.

Simple question, woven or non woven? Non woven seems to be about £250 a roll, woven seems to be about £150 a roll.

It's to go under a driveway which will be 4" of type1 and 3" of recycled kerb (for now)

If your substrate is flat go woven, if it's got dips and hollows or liable to be soft in patches etc go non woven.

I assume it needs something to stop the type1 migrating downwards.... Permeable, I guess...

I can get it flat-ish using the digger with the grading bucket.

Gotcha.... I assume that the non-woven is more compliant then, if it can deal with dips/hollows/soft spots.

It doesn't open up like woven.

With woven you get gaps between the fibres

Understood - I like the non-woven that I've used before so will buy similar. Not really fussed if it's £100 a roll more, it's only money.

Yep.... It grows on trees if you're south of the M4

Jokes aside, I work hard, earn well and don't begrudge spending money on building work or materials if it ensures a good outcome. Can't take it with me and don't have any kids to leave any too.

Woven is a lot more forgiving, yes the weave opens, but the non woven can rip so you almost always get some holes.... unless you blind it with sand first ...

Understood, I can imagine what the woven is like now and see how it could open up. It's like tarpaulin material? I've never had non-woven open up on me...

Non woven tears around the same stuff that opens woven. End of the day its to contain the hardcore, I only used non woven nearer the surface 2here it also provides weed suppression

We don't have roots and stuff to worry about tearing, just the odd surface rock, and my poor digger driving skills to deal with when it comes to levelling. I think I'll stick with the non-woven.

I avoid the use of geotextile wherever I can, for sub base I use washed/recycled crushed mixed in with as dug sand topped of with scalps, it holds all the sub base together and allows free drainage. Done thousands of meters of this and it never fails, I have seen way to many tracks/roads with a sea of geotxtile popping up out of the ground all over the place where topping has moved, hate the stuff.

Interesting... I was always under the impression that it was a must to prevent migration of the sub base with the sub grade? So your build up would be recycled crush mixed with sharp sand then road scalps on top?

Basically yes unless the ground itself has a drainage issue.

I have a good supply of recycled kerb mix/scalpings - could I use this all the way up or would you advise 4" of type1 or recycled concrete to start? It will be contained on all edges by block paving and used as a parking area.
