I have a good supply of recycled kerb mix/scalpings - could I use this all the way up or would you advise 4" of type1 or recycled concrete to start? It will be contained on all edges by block paving and used as a parking area.

The ground conditions will determine what you can “get away with” but I always put some type 1 down (100mm minimum). If the topping is going to be temporary you may as well put down a base that can be utilised again later.

Our ground here is mostly rock/stone with some earth in. Further down there's clay. I'm going to go with 4" of clean crushed concrete (recycled aggregate) on a geotextile, then 4" of recycled asphalt kerb mix on top. Eventually I think my wife wants Tarmac, but for now, recycled stuff will do.

Interesting... I was always under the impression that it was a must to prevent migration of the sub base with the sub grade?

Fair point... But it seems like cheap insurance against migration. I could cover the whole garden in the stuff for £250
