Getting very stuck plastic part off windscreen?

Any ideas please - very hard plastic very stuck to the inside of my new to me car windscreen. I tried a plastic razor blade in there but the plastic is hard and doesn't allow much space to get in behind it.

I am afraid of scratching or cracking the windscreen.

Is there maybe a very thin gauge wire that could be used to saw the glue pad out?

I had the same problem, got it off with a Stanley knife blade in a scraper handle, get it as warm as you can and if possible wipe round the edge first with glue remover 15 mins or so before trying, - I used some Autoglym stuff I had but there’s better out there.

Warm from the outside of the window screen area with a hair dryer, VERY-VERY CAREFULLY, for a few minutes moving hair dryer at all times, someone else pulling gently from the inside.

If you only create a gap in one corner to allow you to apply some solvent behind it, it should remove it.

Loctite 7200 Gasket remover, spray it on, leave 20-30 mins, scrape it off.
DON'T get it on any plastics or painted surfaces.

I've had good results before using UPVC solvent cleaner ( 1L is cheap from my local double-glazing shop, have also seen it in Wickes), be careful not to spill any on plastic or vinyl..

I'm sure there are better things available but it was what I had handy and it worked

Ignore it until the next hot sunny day, as it'll be far easier to remove when warm.

Good points on the heat. I will gently warm the area with a hairdryer when I go to remove it.

I found these and think they may be just the ticket to be able to safely get behind and cut the strong glue pad to get the plastic off and the rest will be easy once plastic off.

A feeler gauge will do the same thing. Good to have a cheap spare set for abuse like this!

A bit of acetone on a tissue and hold in place for a few minutes would likely soften enough to peel off.


Somewhat different question, my older car has some anti theft stickers on the front windows, except they are very hard and brittle to remove, They dont peel and crumble instead, very slow with a blade. Any ideas?

Maybe I confused things by saying it's a new to me car. Which it is but it's a 2017 year! Lost likely the PO fitted it and I bought the car privately so I'll be taking this off.

I think the thin Metal spudger tool should be ideal to cut the adhesive enough to get the plastic tab off and clean up the rest safely.

If it's not in the way I'd wait until summer. Meths is my go to, then petrol, then acetone. Usual disclaimers about spilling them on plastics. If it's a foam pad 5 amp fuse wire will split them easily if you have some.

I have a number of spudgers, including yours, plastic and steel, I'm not sure it will do ok for your intended use, but maybe.

I find the steel ones pretty good in helping me pry open Dyson batteries.

IMO I think you might be better off with a cheapo sharp edge ice scraper that has a handle.

Which ever type, just be ever so careful when heating the screen with a hair dryer, you could crack it.

Keep it at a shallow angle and you'll not scratch the glass.
Whatever is left you can use celly thinners on a cloth to soften and scrape off.
Don't think I'd chance the hair dryer, especially in the cold weather.

I ordered a new car in the 80's and asked them to write "no advertising stickers on windows" on the order form, I called in to show my insurance details and the salesman said "your car is been prepped, would you like to see it?", as soon as I saw it I said "cancel the order" while pointing at the garage name sticker in the back window
There were no stickers when I collected the car

Indeed probably not worth the risk in the cold spell.

Remove as much of the pad as possible, then a rag soaked with Isopropyl Alcohol (I keep some in a sprayer all the time) pressed against it.
It'll peel right off. Iso Alcohol leaves no residue. That's how we de-badged body panels.

Usually a fan of IPA but I found it flashed off and did not really soak into the sticky goo last time I did this.
Used white spirit which seemed to melt the goo and soaked in better.
Then one of these and a very careful wafting of heat gun on low.

No bother

I used plastic razor blades (yes such a thing exists!) And autoglym tar remover on this car for similar stickers and it worked great. The autoglym tar remover smells pleasant too so doesn't stink the car out either

(Too thick to get behind this plastic tab of mine though)
