The trouble is if you double the diameter of the nozzle you quadruple the area of the nozzle, and presumably quadruple the air requirements. You can hold the nozzle further away, but you get less force at the work surface.
If the paint I'm shifting is fairly easy to shift I hold the nozzle at an angle so it sweeps an area rather than blasts it from above.
