French drivers

I have seen a few French plates doing stupid things over here recently. Wrong side of the road was one but I guess its an easy mistake, when your used to being on the wrong side...

I have lived on the 'wrong' side of the road since '75. I did arrive in Plymouth and thought to do a round the coast trip to Bath, Since it was early, we found some tiny port with a Salmon smoker outfit, so we had breakfast over looking the sea, with the salmon and a French Boule loaf . Then drove along narrow Devon lanes for a while, before I suddenly realised I was driving on the wrong side... It doesn't happen in busy places, but when your guard is down on little roads.
That was around '85, managed to stay 'correct' since then.

Obviously I am just helping out friends here. At 76, I really should avoid rolling under cars on cold floors. Should reserve my talents for more fun activaties, like getting my new boat in the water..

I really hope your friends are 86 plus . . .

Sounds like the favour you would do as a 26/36/46 yr old . .. at 76, time to offer advice only and do what you enjoy doing . . . which I would guess isn't having the change of dropping a gearbox on you and busting something on you - stuff the box!

Ive realised i drive more miles in France (4-5000m),per year than here,i find their standards are much higher than the uk.

Hee hee.

Plenty of places around France with similar standard of driving as to say, Bradford in the usual commuting times and routes. And even more if you have UK plates that seem to be a challenge to be chopped up/cut off/tail gated etc..

I did my mum's, 6 speed, same as the previous poster - engine support bar, half-shafts out, gearbox out. Actually I did it twice in one day because I put the bloody clutch disc on backwards ('Getriebeseite' on the disc means gearbox side. I did already know this yet I still put it on wrong way. Somehow in my brain I saw 'inside' or something). Clutch wouldn't disengage.

Yep, the friends are early 80s.
But engine bar fabbed up, car on supports and ready to do the shafts tomorrow. Engine hoist poised..All looks straight forward...
Will let y'all know if I drop the box on my toe

Come to think of it, I might have only removed the one driveshaft, and just disconnected the other one of course.

You can leave the long driver's side shaft in the hub, unbolt it from the box and move it out the way. The short passenger's side one you normally remove entirely.
