So customer came in the other day for 2 tyres, he couldn't find the lock nut. I said 'no problem, I'll remove it with our removal kit.'
I picked the size I thought would work.. they are a smooth cone shape inside the socket and there are various sizes.
I battered it on with a lump hammer as far as I could, put the breaker bar on it and the f...er just kept spinning.
By now the customer had contacted the previous owner, who happened to have the lock nut sitting in their new car!
I couldn't grind it, there wasn't enough sticking out of the bolt hole, I couldn't split it with a chisel, there wasn't enough room around the socket. I had to break out the welder! My Static Arc gasless mig.
Now I have never welded on or near a car before so was crapping myself but I contacted a mechanic friend who assured me it was safe and I wouldn't do any damage to the car, due to the hub/suspension being separated from the vehicle essentially by rubber mountings.
I managed to find something hex shape that fitted inside the socket perfectly and got it tacked on, put grips on it and whacked it off with the hammer..success! Lol
