Funny, that thought had occurred to me just before I got sight of your post.
It would seem logical, can someone who knows about these things explain if there is a flaw with this line of thought?

I think the only problem that would come up is if the welders are different because transformers shift the phase slightly (Think of it as a slight time delay), if the transformers are different then the output might be out of sync.

2.4mm flux cored wire on a Terromatic wire feeder.
Or 1.6mm ally on a 500 amp pulse MIG, or some ally bronze on a 625 amp Miller were the biggest/hottest welds I've needed to do. That's small beans compared to running a twin or triple wire submerged arc system, I've seen a 4 inch wide weld laid down by 3 sub arc heads traveling simultaneously in the same joint, there were three Lincoln 1500 DC power sources, one for each head.
Not run a sub arc myself, but it's a very impressive thing if welder power willy waving floats your boat

I've had a bit to do with sub arc. The most I've seen is 6 wires (3ac and 3dc). Total of 2100 amps per pass.

My one is a 19mm rod,1800 amps.6 inch diameter weld pool supposedly.
Ive only about 800 amps on diesel atm so itll be another while before i can verify!

Big big chunks of steel like hulls of bigger ships,repairing cracks,building up castings etc.

There's a Lincoln DC1500 on the bay in Lithuania right now, find another and 374 amps of mains supply and you're up and running.

My college tutor told of some heavy welding he did, as I recall he said the wire (MIG) was 3mm. Forget the amps, it was welding inside a structure with two welders at opposite sides working round. Sounding to be quite something.

Also spoke of some welding done on some kind of tank/armored thing with very thick metal. Positioned as an open corner joint, forget the size of rod but very thick, many hundreds of amps (did he say 600?) and a welder started from each end and met in the middle, which was quite something apparently!

When the lengthserving my time " engineering " in the steel works common rods for welding fabricated beams were 3/8" Dia havnt a clue what sort of amps they were using,nowhere near you sub-arc boys, I know they were 3/8" because we knocked the flux off and used them to make pokers for the fire, nice rods but had a lot of small serrations along the length,probably caused by the machine feeding them through the flux coating machine etc,
