I cant imagine what it would have felt like in Kyle of Lochalsh when a Mine laying ship broke its moring full of mines. It nearly blow most of the West coast to bits.

There's a sea Mine in the town, detailing the ordeal. I cant find anything on it, its worth a read.

The remains sit in 20-odd metres of water and I dived it some years ago as a night dive. Due to coming face to face with a pair of hefty seals just off the sea bed, the report in my dive log starts with: F******G HELL!!!

I laugh about it now but at the time it was a seriously brown drysuit moment .

I have sailed past the Richard Montgomery wreck many times & it is an eerie sight. As long as im not near it when it goes bang. The bit in the wikepedia article about degrading fuses becoming more unstable is particularly pertinent. A few years ago British Geological survey were recording approx half a dozen unexplained underwater explosions around the coast of the UK per year, the conclusion was dumped or unexplosed ordnance spontaneously detonating.
The number of munitions dumps around our coasts is staggering. No wonder the Eod boys are kept busy.

Both were damaged during practice firings, one had pierced the propellant casing when a micro switch failed and it hit a part it shouldn’t. Procedure at the time (I’m guessing it still is?) if it was damaged beyond a certain point that it be lowered over the side into the water rather than risk carrying it back. Iirc they were both practice rounds so no HE just the cordite and primer.

The Mk5 was good at making the ones with green bodies and yellow bands getting "Corrupted".

Then it was lower into a boat, gently float away.
HBM a block of plastic. Set and water pressure switch.
Float test.
Run away.

My friend found a torpedo washed up on the rocks when he was ten. He told someone at school and bomb disposal had to come down to remove it. When they asked him where it was exactly he told them and also mentioned it wouldn’t blow up - when bomb disposal asked him how he could be sure it wouldn’t blow up he told them he had been chucking rocks at it all Sunday in an attempt to get it to blow up.

My father found a hand grenade in his garden so he took it to the local police station. It resulted in a total lockdown and evacuation of the area and the bomb squad were called out. It turned out to be a home guard training grenade. He's passed away now but iam certain he knew and did it for a joke.

We found one at the college farm, it had been used in ww2 as a training area. My self (had some experiance with props etc including weapons and grenades) and a class mate (was in the TA) had a little look, It was defenmatly a Mills Bomb, but, it had a hole in the top, (no primer no spoon and no pin and no where for the pin and spoon to fit) and a plate on the bottom, Our assumption was it was actually a post war paper weight or something! It sits to this day (well I expect) in the Countryside management store room in the college
