Grinding dust on glass

I do most of my welding and grinding outside of the kitchen. A while back I was grinding a fair sized part and I noticed a lot of sparks going towards the window. No problem I thought

It appears that hot steel and grit sparks do stick to glass.

I've since cleaned the windows a few times but the lumpy grit remained. Knowing I had a glass scraper somewhere, left it for another day..

Found the scraper (just a razor blade in a holder), it did take the grit off and this is the result.

Any ideas or coatings I can use to improve it?

From a normal distance it is very small and looks like light spots of rain.

Bite the bullet, open the wallet, time for a replacement DG unit pane and a lesson learnt or live with it.

I'm still waiting for some-one to try filling the divots with resin and reporting back.

I do have a tube of Liquid Optically Clear Adhesive, the stuff used for bonding phone screens, quite cheap on ebay.. might give that a try.

However theres thousands of the little grits and it would take forever. Perhaps it can just be wiped over.

The grits are not a big problem as we dont usually look out of that side, luckly I missed the main window.
They were new glass about 5 or 6 years ago.

We had new door a few years back, white upvc. I told them to get a brown one, so yes it suffers the rust measles. I do clean it off occasionally. One day I will paint the upvc and move my area to other end of garden!

I cringe when I see videos or pictures of people welding at cars and the glass or paint isn't protected. I always throw a clean welding blanket over any nearby glass or paint its essential really as spark damage is a real thing as many find out too late.

You will be surprised how cheep a new double-glazed window can be, have changed a few over the years.
You can pop the inner beading out with a thin paint scraper or spudger. get some frame packers from local DIY shop. only takes about 30 mins once you get the hang of it.

at least its only one pain of glass, many years ago when my friend was doing his apprenticeship as a pattern maker at the Dagenham engine plant, they had a furnace explosion that chucked tones of hot metal dust into the air, it went all over Frog island where they store the cars for delivery, about 2K cars had to be resprayed along with quite a few staff who had their cars paint damaged.

What you've got to worry about is when your neighbours put two and two together . . . If you think of how much orange rusty dust is on your plastic windows etc, blown from when you did some cutting, grinding some distance away . . . It can blow over theirs too . . .

Sliding door on my vw bus is like this, done by me about 24 years ago when I did a replacement lower half in the tight garage when I lived in Sussex. Its under a cover in the yard here at the moment waiting for my cnc plasma table project to be finished, and once the tinwear is bashed into shape, I'll have to replace the glass finally too.
The amount of shows you see with people casually grinding on cars, or with cars in the backdrop, both on "real" shows and youtube, but nobody ever seems to admit to having done this...

Exactly this. Watch some of the TV custom shows and I have no idea how they avoid damage - maybe they dint, but just don't show it.

Same in industry - having to point out to people their mild steel sparks are going up our stainless machine . . . Or worse, straight into paper packaging or wooden crates. Contract sparkies with cordless grinders hacking up trunking seem to be the worst culprits!

I'm a guilty party, done it (grinding sparks )to the windscreen of my (then) 1600E, but Some tw*t decided it would look better with a brick through the screen, Saved me the time deciding what to do about I suppose.

Learned my lesson years ago with an expensive windscreen. Glass is stuffed.

Keep grinding and welding sparks away from any glass, plastics, upholstery. And your overalls ...........

I have a cowhide and pieces of asbestos for the purpose.

We used to get a lot of problems with hot metal sparks out of the stack at the foundry, after a few weeks your car roof would feel like sandpaper, the lab used to hand out bottles of Oxalic acid to treat it.

Take glass unit out, turn it around, blame the wife, tut a lot, replace unit and never let the wife forget the time she ruined a perfectly good window......

My friend was about to weld his Ferrari Dino door (not pocket change) without covering the glass.

I mentioned it to him, and I could totally see that he knew I was right, but the conflict between wanting to just get on with it, and having to stop to get something to cover the glass, was plain to see.


I too have stuffed something (I mean, more than one thing, in sure, but certainly one memorable thing) -

Welding up a register plate, with glassless wire, in a large chimney above a vitreous enamel (basically glass) stove... : (


But, hey, at least "I" saved that Dino window! : )

Way back in '88 I had a stint programming a large CNC plasma, and a mine sweeper motor job came thru the shop.

The whole frame was stainless.

The notes said to the effect, special grinding wheels to be used on this job only, no regular grinding going
on nearby, etc.
And when the whole motor frame was welded up, a meter of some sort was going to be used all over it
to make sure we did it right, as lives were at stake.
