I just ordered it from a local motorsport equipment supplier, it was for a 205 gti.

Kaaz are very popular with the drift folk so I'd be amazed if they don't have one to suit a BMW!

Viscous diffs can be good, if they're not worn out. They're much better than that bodged up horror show they call a LSD where they use the spider gear friction to create lock. This not only wears out the gears, it also loses its effectiveness fairly quickly - and I know this, cos i tried it on a spare nissan diff! The viscous unit was worn out on it anyway so I spaced the spider gears to create friction. It worked for about 2-3 weeks.

Other option would be a torsen type like a quaife. Good choice for fast road/track. Nice to live with every day.

If you want proper locking you have two good choices: 1. welded diff. 2. plated diff. Both are great options, the welded diff is very predictable and easiest of any diff to control in a drift.

A tight plated diff has all the disadvantages of a welded diff for wheel hopping around car parks etc. If it's not that tight, it's probably not all that effective.

If it's a track car, my personal choice would be a tight plated or welded, both are super predictable and easy to drive on.

The less drive you have to that outside wheel, the less predictable the back end is IME.

They do but they start just over 1k.
It's only a test as he got the kit half price. Just really want to see how it holds up.


All done tonight anyway. Turned just fine with standard tipped tool.

Yep they were. I cut the shafts shorter using and in to out cut as the only bit it did not like was the last couple of mm.


Was amazed how the gears held tight and straight in the 3 jaw chuck as they were not pushed against the chuck because they did not stick out far enough

I honestly really wouldn't have bothered with one of those kits, they're terrible, only give you a bit of preload with no ramping like a proper LSD, and wear like the clappers.

It was 150 quid and he does not have 1k spare before Xmas.
It's only to use in the winter while the GTR is dry stored as his company have stopped him having the kids in the van.

Well cars need to go round corners too, so I’d imagine the ‘limited’ part covers that bit?

Plated lsd’s are pre loaded to suit the weight of a car, using an lsd diff designed to work in a car with a ton of anchor over the front wheels will make an interesting ride when installed in a trike, I would stick with an open diff for a trike.

Ah, yes, good point. Something like a Powerlok would probably be more suitable, where it only locks when you hit the throttle hard.

So, which model of open BMW IRS would suffice? And doesn’t look to agricultural.

What about a Nissan 200sx back end with the R200 diff? You can get aftermarket adjustable arms and diffs and parts off the shelf dead easy, and they're utterly bulletproof. Maybe too beefy for a trike though...

I’m thinking of using a 5.7 litre V8 motor I have laying around, so perhaps not too beefy. Are they readily available?

The R200 diffs were fitted to S13, S14, S15, R32, R33, R34 as well as quite a few others, all in various configurations and ratios. SXOC and Zilvia were my sources of info when I had an S14.
The R230 diffs are bigger again (not that ANYONE has problems with the R200) and were fitted to Z32s and R33/R34 GTRs IIRC, also possibly Z33s, not sure.

They're not as common as they were 10 years ago. 10 years ago you could get any part you wanted as loads of those 90's datsuns had just been scrapped across the country due to floorpan rust. Now they're worth too much to scrap!
