Hammerite paint cheap at Halfords.

I've picked up 10 pots of Hammerite paint yesterday at Halfords for next to nothing!

£4 for the 750ml tins and £1.80 for the smaller ones

They're getting rid of it all as they aren't stocking it anymore as "it's got dangerous chemicals in it" or it is good stuff so might harm you if you drink it
Sounds like the replacement will be watered down camels slash!

They've already downgraded hammerite years ago, like paint stripper, it was good once.. until whatever safety eurobollox kicked in.

yeah one of the chemicals that is used in model paints (humbrol and revell) is now banned so they've had to reformulate them. think the chemical was Methyl Ethyl Ketoxime to allow the paint to flow better (but could be wrong on that)

MEKO is usually in there to stop a skin forming in the tin - like modern Hammerite does...

I think it was dichloromethane that was taken out of stuff. The only skin on something that is acceptable is rice pudding!

Just give it a coat of reconditioning paint & guarantee it as far as the door!

Superb product. Simply the best paint for polished stone. Wouldn't put it on anything else.

Well @Porkypine says they have already took something out of it. I rememember using it in the late 70s. Will it still be good enough even though it is on offer to clear?

Yes I've been using it in recent years I don't notice any perceivable difference IMO

In the photo of the OP the large tins appear different from each other. Some say metal paint , which we know it as. What about the ones that say garage doors?? What is the relavance of garage doors, is that for painting alluminium or something?

Well I've used it back in the day, and I've used the more modern version, the modern version is nowhere near as good in terms of being a hard solid paint that stays put.
However, depending on what you want it for, and if you regard it as just another gloss paint, then it's still worth having if it's at a bargain price imho

A few years back I did my Elliot pillar drill in a tin of green hammerite I had kicking around - it’s quite hard wearing and looks really nice even if I do say so myself, it may not be “as good as it was when it had asbestos/agent orange” or whatever it had removed but it’s a decent finish.

Don’t really get the hate for it to be honest.

At one point we used the original stuff on Land Rover chassis parts and all good, going on experience I wouldn't use the new stuff for that anymore.
Still as I said, provided you have no wild expectations, it'd be OK as a non stressed gloss paint
