Hammerite paint cheap at Halfords.

A few years back I did my Elliot pillar drill in a tin of green hammerite I had kicking around - it’s quite hard wearing and looks really nice even if I do say so myself, it may not be “as good as it was when it had asbestos/agent orange” or whatever it had removed but it’s a decent finish.

Don’t really get the hate for it to be honest.

I would not say people hate it. I think it is just a human trait. People tend to dislike change.

For a bit of paint to have kicking around the workshop I’d grab a few tins at that price!

£4 for the 750ml tins and £1.80 for the smaller ones

They're getting rid of it all as they aren't stocking it anymore as "it's got dangerous chemicals in it" or it is good stuff so might harm you if you drink it
Sounds like the replacement will be watered down camels slash!

I paid about £12 for a small tin last month.

I've painted several hot rods chassis's (chassii ?) in black Hammerite, it's a very forgiving finish, when you make mistakes and alterations on a regular basis, so easy to touch up without the repair sticking out like the dogs proverbial.

Prefer the crusty bit around the edge personally.

I moved in to my current house about 30 years ago and found the tank for the CH oil in real bad shape. Cleaned it as best I could and painted it with the 1993 version of Hammerite and it was brilliant. Sadly, that was just about the last time I used it.

i bought a fair few big tins of smoothrite for peanuts at autojumbles. its brill for painting machinery and can be thinned and sprayed with celly thinners. the only can i did buy and havent used id a tin of gold god it would look revolting and loud

Thanks for the tip. I was able to acquire four tins at the Halfords in Neath today. Same prices, £1.80 for the small tins and £4.00 for the 750mil size.

Mine was made back when Hunters were still going and it was still a good product. Only ‘smoothrite’, for me - I’m not keen on ‘hammered‘ finishes. I’m still using it.

thin and spray with celly thinners and build up the coats and it wont go hammered and leaves a nice metalic smooth finish

I got a few tins today as I was driving past a Halfords in Handforth, Manchester on the way back from work! It’s still marked up on the shelf ticket as full price but sure enough £4 a tin when paid for. I’m guessing the shelf price is the reason it’s not already cleared out!

Being the tightwad I am I thought I’d try my Halfords trade card (you never know…) and it bumped it up to £9 a
tin - not sure what’s happening there but i told him to forget that

Theres a race for skin in our house then she starts moaning it's bad for you " give the cats " stuff the moggy's I was here first give them the chicken

Know what,like that its also good on sawn wood esp on feather edge fencing
