im making a shed in my back garden for woorking on my cars, im planning to cover the whole garden 17meters by 7meters with a 6" thick re-enforced concrete floor on top of hardcore , im trying to get the price for all the materials but still dont know how thick the hardcore will have to be , i was thinking about 2 foot? anyone know how much ill need

depending on how hard your ground is you may not even need hard core and 2 foot of it is way too much

thats just go ahead and do it isnt it then put in for retro if sh .//..t hits the fan and even then it normaly grantedwots planning permission
ah well there is no planning permission required for turning ur garden concrete instead of grass but the workshop im building on the slab will only be 25m square so 4m x 6m and you dont need permission for a workshop that size or under

make a few annonymous enquirys here the shed has to be a certain size before planning is needed but not sure about ireland google it

If you are covering your entire garden where is the rain water going to go? You need to lay a slight fall to where ever your water can be lost. In the UK hard standings, roadways etc do need planning permission, and the maxium you can build in a garden is 50% of the curtilage of the property as of 1948

150mm is not realy required ... 100mm will be fine for cars & light vans assuming you are on a clay
150-250 hardcore well compacted should be enough depending on the sub-soil conditions, then idealy 25mm of sand blinding... fills all the hiles & hepls prevent the cement running out of the bottom layer of concrete.

really i never knew that i might just go with under 50% of my garden so as i can still park cars on the grass if needs be and it would make the whole build cheaper, i was warned to go to 150 though , i will have a spraybooth/workshop made with blocks my 300 liter compressor big toolbox full of tools heavy welder probably and 2 cars at times

Whenever I have had to lay concrete to support weight , I tend dig out the ground to specified depth, compact it down, then lay 6" of hardcore and compact that, then 6" of concrete reinforced with rebar.
Is it definitely a shed or is it going to have brick walls ? Personally if its having walls then obviously footings will be needed for the walls and get a damp proof course in there as well. I would tend to want to insulate the slab as well with a few sheets of xtratherm or such like if you plan on working in there when its a bit chilly !!
