How much work will you be doing in it?? If your doing a lot of late hours making noise having cars parked around the place your neighbors might kick up a fuss and contact the council. Just a thought...
Is there any services going through your lawn?? e.g Water, sewage, gas, ESB, telecom/choras? Would be handy to know before digging...
As stated before look onto proper drainage and damp proofing for the area.
Are you in the City or County? This might have some info for you...

thanks man , the workshop will only be for my own personal use so i wont be making noise at stupid hours or having cars parked everywhere , id say ill call into the county hall and see what info they can give me

Not sure of your planning guidelines in your area, but if the roof is anything but shingles (wooden shed roof) then it turns from being a shed into an outhouse which then is classed a permanent structure and therefore requires planning permission, might be wise to make an anonymous call to the planning office to get clarity.
just a bit of clarification: you always need footings, it's just a question of how deep.
if you get through your topsoil and hit 6 foot of soft clay then you may have to keep digging. if you have a little topsoil and maybe hit rock or something else that's fairly stable you build off that but you have always got to get rid of anything unstable beneath your footings and found on a good solid base. or build a raft if that would work in your situation.

For hardcore, have a word with any local farmers around you.
Round here, and I don't exactly live in the countryside, there are plenty of farmers that spend the winter crushing concrete, bricks, etc into useable rubble. Mainly they use it for their access tracks, but I know of at least 4 around here that sell it on for around £5 a ton crushed, and some will deliver it for a small fee.
