Never been able to find an oil level window on mine just the front which is for the level for pumping to the slides. Fairly sure its contained independent of the carriage gearbox.

Took the idea from Shok Dr and cut a door way in the tail stock end leg

so while the sun was shining I got some painting done

not the exact color match but the best match I could make looking at RAL charts on the web

That's a superb looking job you have done there, keep the pic coming.

I do like the door in the tailstock leg, I may have to do that with mine one day.

I see in your pic you have nice graphics on your speed plate Iv scanned all mine and have been messing around in photoshop with view to printing some up some how my speed plate is badly damage.

Did you have new ones made or buy some ?

I've reproduced most of them the speed chart has been on there for a few yrs now> It wont cone as much surprise that 600 Group want stupid money for the plates. I intend on reselling them at some point

Hmm could have a small problem I took the 1-8 selector knob off and took the gear(to clean the rust off) out I made witness marks on the box and the holder body but DOH! didn't pay attention to the position the gears were in. Now iv put it back tougher and the witness marks and grub screw marks all line up, but don't know if its selecting the correct gears to the correct number.
Any body know which position the gear should be in to equate to position 1.

Long shot I know and I'm a dumb ass for not checking the position the gears were in

Can't you remove the knob and look for a witness mark from the dog point screw where is was originally fitted? Otherwise all I can suggest is keep turning it all the way to the right until you hit the selector stop then put it in position 8. If there's no stop all I can think of is set it for threading, put a black marker in the toolholder and 'draw' a thread on some stock then check the pitch with a thread gauge. That should tell you what number the dial should read for the pitch you drew.

I have the gearbox off my M300 at the mo, can't get in the garage for a few days but will get some pics and info over the weekend

And I do have a question, did you spray, roller or brush paint your Harrison? Mine is looking very shabby and have now been inspired to give it a repaint, once the extension to my garage is built

Yep its me on the Yahoo group, And the would be stunning if you could take some pics of the gear box I really need to know which gear is engaged when the rotary selector is in position 1

Yep spray I have one of them cheap fast mover HVLP guns bought at auto jumble for £15 the paint was from here http://arc-rite.co.uk/tractor--machinery-763-c.asp no other reason than found on google I only bought 1/2 liter for the main beige not enough just short the green have 1/4 tin left

Just put a video on YouTube to show where I have got to with the gearbox.
I also have seen on the underside of the gear sliders they are numbered 1 through 4 from left to right as you look at the video but I could find no other markings any where ie: master spline etc etc to aid assembly.
Have phone the 600 group and left a message but have had no reply from them

Well had some more time to get bits done I got a steering rack boot for the carriage gear box selector shaft Ill see how it goes have replaced various bearings and have made a mod to the oil seal on the carriage drive shaft tube to try and over come the ware from the oil seals in the shaft have to see how that goes .
I have bought an invertek VFD same as this (https://www.motorcontrolwarehouse.co.uk/invertek-ode-3-220105-1f42-optidrive-e3.html ) to power the lathe I want to try and use as much of the original wiring as possible IE the foot stop emergency stop button etc but I'm having a real head ache trying to figure out how to configure the VFD to use the wiring ? Any of you guys use these VFD ? IV read the manual looked at loads of videos on Utube still cant get me head round it any help much appreciated.

Wire all e-stops in series and use the stop function in the vfd. If you want fwd/rev on the stick, then you need to wire them to thw fwd and rev contacts in the vfd. One day I might just get round to doung mine

Most apron lever systems just have microswitches at the headstock so splicing them into one of the default control set-ups looks straightforward, then just daisychain your safety interlock and emergency stops together to prevent whoopsies.

When I wired up the video on my Harrison I wanted to keep as much of the original wiring as possible, but I ended up stripping it all out! I did re-use all the original switches though. You'll need to get some shielded CY cable, probably 7 core, for the control side of things.
I seem to remember one of the Yahoo group members (Paul???) put a diagram of his wiring in the files section, and it included all the original control gear. Give me a shout if you can't find it as I may have downloaded it at some point in the past and stuck it on an external drive somewhere.

Shock Dr penfold Newlands thanks for the reply's but I totally understand the wiring that is on the lathe and have traced all the wires.

What the problem is I dont understand how to program the VFD what on the face of it looks simple is not as far as I can see anyway, I am more than sure the person who wrote the instruction manual thinks its really simple .

What ill probably do is email inveteck and ask the question
