Which brings up another expense, you can get insurance but it only covers something once, so once it has paid for treatment that condition will not be covered again imagine that on car insurance, if you damaged a front wing it would be repaired but never covered again while you owned the car!.

My sister wanted one and Dad gave her the choice, she could have one but if she didn't look after it then he'd eat it. She realised she wouldn't and would call on Mum to do it so didn't get a pony.

Not mrs Robo's horses though, when her last one had to be put down she made sure it was done with drugs so the meat was inedible and he wouldn't go for dog food.
I hate to think what they cost to run, about 10 years ago I did a "fag packet" calculation and worked out it was about £150 a week I"m sure it's much more now.

Drill a hole in the saucepan to let out the air so it doesn't try to float on the condensed steam?

I think the weight of the haynet will stop it floating and the box will be emptied between steamings.

I don't think the missus' is that much. We don't have a huge amount of grazing so she gets fed mostly on hay and HiFi Lite (**** hay) as she's prone to laminitis. About 2 months for a round bale of really nice hay which costs us £30 delivered into the stable by a neighbour. Farrier is £80 every 7 weeks. So probably about £75 a month for us but she is stabled at home and we did have the cost of building that (about £3k doing it myself).

In the interests of reducing part count, you can buy female connectors with metal balls and 3/4" BSP male thread to eliminate the green hosepipe from the steamer. You can also buy male hosepipe connectors with 1/2" BSP female threads.

So, on the steamer, use Toolstation 53390 and 94885 and C032012 from the site above (15mm compression fittings have a 1/2" BSP male thread, so the bush will go straight on. 20p cheaper than TS 91660 and you get a free nut and olive).

On the tub, use Toolstation 56192, 83555 and 23323 and C033319 from easy-irrigation.

We call out the lager animal vet as required, to be honest they are far more helpful and less expensive than the small animal variety, also much more pragmatic. If its time to call it a day, its time, no dragging it out.

Its 40 quid for a 1ml injection at the small animal vet, the large animal one leaves you the 100ml bottle for 35 quid. So we have a fair selection of animal meds in the fridge just in case. Recently we had an issue phone consult, drove to his house, collect correct stuff, came home and treated animal, that for 40 quid for a drug called Estrumate, used in horses and cattle too.

Most recent bill for a 25 minute weekend call out was £138. We used our own pain killers etc, to get a dead baby Alpaca out, that I couldnt reposition so she would deliver it.

Quite a few years back my parents had two dogs terrorising their sheep, both dogs got shot but the neighbour who came to help out with his loader / duelly tractor (down a very steep field) suggested getting the vets involved as there might need to be more put down other than the dead ones. Vet came up and a total of 17 were dispatched between either the dogs or the rifles. At least we got some dog meat out of them.

Cheaper too, youd get at least 500 .22 rounds for the price of the vet call out! With a single sheep unless its a fancy tup, there not really worth the vet fees.

First test run today went well. 2 hay nets fit fine

Plenty of steam but only saw 70°C on the thermometer not sure if that's right.

It certainly gave the genny a work out

Just my luck, 24 bags of shavings delivered so I spent the next half hour carrying them round to the barn, I'm getting too old for this game

And if you want proper flea control you have to pay for a consultation then a prescription and then the medication as front line is now using a different formula. It's now off prescription but useless

The rules and procedures are in place as, unfortunately, not everybody treats animals the way the majority of us would like them to be treated.
Same with drug control, a small percentage of people abusing the system causes blanket treatment of everyone.

I see both sides of the vets counter. Expensive, yes. Rip off, not really.
At the end of the day a pet is a luxury item, much like if you buy a sports car or a boat. You'll get problems eventually and should expect to have to pay to fix them...
