Hearing Protection

Gonna need to enforce hearing protection a bit stronger at our place - got the glassess/goggles thing sorted, and TBH a couple of the lads always have ear plugs in when working.

I've noticed my hearing is starting to deteriorate, what do you boys use/get supplied with. I think the shaped plugs on a cord are fairly good - don't like the ones you have to roll up in your fingers and get grubby before shoving in your lug holes.

A few different types of plug are in the cupboard, i like the rubbery ones on the cord too. I find individual foam ones are next to useless, as are the round foam ones on the plastic neckband thing.

Putting them in correctly is half the problem, pull your ear lobe, and push in the plug. Makes a lot of difference compared to just pushing them in.
I often wear the ear plugs, and if its a very noisy job, a pair of cheapy defenders over the top too.

The Scotch 3M foams work well for me but i have to put them in fat end first! The secret is to roll them up in the bag then just grab the end and pop them in your ears again when your done put them back in the bag and they stay clean.

I have Peltor ead muffs with a built in radio and thay are awsome! and another set the same for helmet mounting.

Best quality for the money is the Peltor Optime 2 the 2 is done as 11

I modifiy the glasses and shorten the arms to make them more comfy with muffs on.

Ear defenders always seem to get in the way, although seem to block out the most noise. We have some Peltor ones, very large, but block out virtually every sound.

The radio ones have mics as well so it can be on nowt but the radio a mix of radio and background just the mics for normal conversation or all off.

Interestingly with just the radio on the muffs seem more effective.

Really fancy the full on ones with bluetooth, noise cancelling and the radio but they are well over £200!

The info i have had through clay shooting is that the bone behind your ear transmits sound to your ear once it gets faily loud so muffs provide better protection.

Could have done with them last night as i was down to Glasgow to see Airbourne, 24 hours later and my ears are still ringing! It was way too loud nothing but distortion!!! Good gig other wise

You can get clip on ear defenders VAT free if you buy them at the same time as a helmet, but you have to pay the full 17.5% if you buy them on thie own

Hi Paul.
I use the ones as in the pic below. I used them years ago in the steelworks. I was so impressed at how well these rubber ear plugs seal, that when i finished at the steel works i bought a box full of them from a safety supplier for use at home. The brand is "Howard Leight" Quiet. If you want me to send you a couple of packs to try just PM me your address.

I use pelter ear muffs yellow for light stuff got green mounted on helmet council road spec and the big red in the van for big stuff ear plugs make me sick as i suffer from wax ear and if i have to use plugs spend the next week deaf from wax

THIS IS IMPORTANT

Not a lot of people know that ear protection be it plugs or muffs are classed for different use. They ALL have a SRN rating. It is very important you use the correct rating for the noise level you are trying to attenuate, too much attenuation is as bad as too little.

Not only do different types/makes work at different decibels but also different frequencies, this is very important to note.

I too have suffered hearing damage and personally I use E.A.R Ultrafits, expensive but they last for months and can be washed in a little soapy water if needed.


When I have the money I going to buy myself a pair of noise cancelling defenders by these guys sensear. they do mu8ffs and plugs, ARCO sell them. Expensive but like eyes you only get one pair.

We recently had hearing tests at work, the occy health nurse said i had not heard anything with my right ear which I hadn't. My workmate was first in on PM shift and had the same problem, so on investigation he found the right channel was not plugged in!, turns out she had tested 3 people before me and not wondered why we were all deaf in right ear.
We all re-did the test this week with both leads plugged in this time and it turns out I'm not deaf in my right ear

Another vote for the rubber corded ones, the foam ones are good but as said, get VERY dirty very quickly.
The loose foam ones in dispensers get thrown about all over the place and we also have a guy who wedges his in longways so they're not actually inside his ear and therefore aren't working.

I have tailor made plugs that have a very small hole that allows some audio in, I find them mutts nutz! Company set us/me to house of hearing for hearing test and, they then make wax mould impression of yer lugs, I realise this may seem a costly process, however, although I,m not sure, can cost for H&S ear not be offset against tax?

Another point, my hearing loss is now recorded at a certain level, if it did get worse, Co has met it,s responsibilty of providing me with suitable & IMO comfortable ear protectors.

We have the loose foam ones in a dispenser too, like woz said...i tried to wear those but can't get used to it!! it's horrible!!
Now i'm waiting to get my own shaped pair of earplugs, it's a company that comes to the plant and they make a mould of your ear...

We (work) use the same type as runnach...custom made.

Keeps most of the noise down and the hole is supposed to make it easier to hear people talking to you.

Whenever we issue safety glasses and ear defenders we get employees to sign to say they had recieved the PPE item, saves claims direct later
It only needs to be an A4 page with there names, date recived and signature then keep in you H&S folder
