I use ordinary peltor in the garage, but never for welding, I also have two sets of moulded in ear types, one with the valve, one with out. To be honest, find the with out the valve best on the bike. For shooting use the ones with the valve.

Tried the electronic things from peltor, didnt like them, though you could talk normally. You can now get moulded in ear jobs with the electronics but they are 300 quid ish usually at shooting shows etc.

Welding is much better if you can hear the arc, It becomes instinctive to hear what your doing.... IF that's stick, MiG or arc... So although jobs like grinding etc I would wear defenders never welding. Most migs sets are pretty quiet and All professional sets only run the FOD so tend to be pretty quite and water coolers are the nosiest part. Yes I have noticed with my mig (it’s just a diy Clarke one but does for me) when you really crank the voltage and wire feed up it starts to sound like a WW2 fighter or gattling gun.

But with the settings about where I think is right I was surprised st the noise coming out.
