It is set up to burn coal or coke with the vents in the bottom of the door. It needs a baffle over the fire and some secondary air inlets higher up to use the gas coming off the wood to make it efficient. The construction looks chunky though, what plate is it made of ? Glue some fire rope round the door as well to help seal it better. Drill a hole in each side higher up and weld a pipe in with some 4mm holes drilled in it and put a plate over each end which can swivel to block or open it to introduce some air above the fire.

Looks good but I think you could do with a rope seal round the door otherwise you won't be able to control the burn.

hmm looks a bit ropey to me?? i mean smoke n fire coming out where it shouldnt flimsy doors n whats with all the extra iron on the front ? . the guys going to burn his gaff down ....

About 50 times too much air inlet holes on that im afraid. a 2 inch dia hole would suffice, and air is drawn in above the fuel / fire for burning wood, no air is needed under the grate, it should be a deep ash bed to gasify the fuel.

Grate set-up is to enable use with coal as an option. Plenty of room between front of grate and rear of doors for air to reach top or bottom of fire. Adjustable air vents can double as guillotine for trimming sausages before they go in the pan on the top, or fingers if youre not careful.

The smoke coming from the doors could be due to the excessive amount of primary air coupled with the small section sizes of timber being burnt and the fact the flue is probably quite short (gasifying faster than the flue can cope with).
As stated above it needs no where near as much primary air. That much could be a recipe for a chimney fire. Secondary air isn't a necessity unless you intend to burn wood in which case it should enter the firebox at the top and flow downwards towards the fire bed to encourage circulation which in turn ensures good mixing and more complete combustion. If you intend to burn smokeless fuel efficiently the gap between the grate and the doors needs to be blocked to prevent the primary air from taking the short cu around the front of the grate and going straight up the flue. But then again with that much primary air it may be best left open! Looks like a good sturdy job though.

you have an in-closed (well almost judging from the flames leaping out of it) open fire. Pointless go copy something else and loose a lot of that lower venting and add a baffle plate, some fire rope might be nice also. You can modify what you have thus far so it actually works efficiently and more important safely with a few more hours and a little more understanding, the fabrication actually looks ok so why waste a good MK1
Funny you should mention that. Its actually a coal mining machine for a customer when he brings the rest of the parts. My mate should then get a good discount on his coal supply in lieu of work done to the machine. Just dont tell the tax man.
There is already a baffle fitted, adjustable on cams from screws on the sides. The flame was only coming out of the door when the flue damper was fully closed. It'll never be run like that of course it just made for a spectacular photo.
I don't know anything about the design of a good wood burner but it looks like a fine piece of metalwork.
How thick is it?
Front plate, grate and legs are from 20mm plate. Rest of box and doors are from 6 and 10mm plate. If any body carries it off to steal it dont fight them!
