Sorry to hijack your thread but as I have all the locals in.

Does anybody know of any local scrap merchants that would entertain me buying steel off them for practicing on? I think £10 to £20 for a boot full of bits they would make more profit than recycling it...

Their Saturday opening hours are really short, something like 09:00-11:00! I'd ring them to check first.

Been this afternoon. Friendly people.

First time I'd been to a scrap yard so didn't really know what's what. The rules etc.

Standard price is £0.38p a kilo. As I found out though if it looks to good, the price goes up a bit. Some stuff stacked is for repairing their bins so any piles of sheet you need to ask about. Fortunately after getting shouted at, the 2mm plate was too thin for what they wanted so I was allowed some.

Once you find the pile of off cuts from the local fabrication place you're in the good stuff.

The lady was very adamant that I was careful of the machinery. I wasn't asked to wear a high vis and I'm surprised they allow it but I shouldn't complain. I just feel the first accident will be the last and going there won't be possible after.

So I came home with:

5mm plate 500x100
5mm box 60x60x1000
2mm plate 100x2500
Small bit of stainless pipe
Small bit of Mild pipe think it's galv
A planter
An Irwin no 6 vice. Working

In general I'm normally the one to say health and safety has gone mad but it's the few thickos that ruin it for the rest.

Maybe I'm being over the top. My experiences with warehouses I've had to go into is jacket on.

I've not been recently, where is the "pile of off cuts from the local fabrication place" ? I've only had big lengths of pipe for BBQ/Log burner flue, was a fiver for a length I could barely lift or fit in the car with the seats down, guessing 5mm by 130dia, 2.5m long.

I don't think it's a perminant thing. It think it's just where they had dumped that particular bin full of off cuts. The rest is having to sort through bike frames, old engines and farm machinery.

And what usually looks good from a distance is usually galv or Ali.

Good crack though, trying to stop myself going again too soon.

I went a few weeks ago, the main man was really friendly and polite and we had a little chat about rock bands!

I too was directed to the fabrication off cuts pile, I sneaked a few pics!

So that was the first time! went again today.

The pile was a little smaller this time.

But the RSJ pile was bigger!

I could spend hours looking at stuff here

Just a disclaimer! I didn't ask permission to take photos I was just pretty covert and wasn't waving my camera phone around and being obnoxious with it so if you go id suggest to do the same. I do highly recommend going and id probably wear steelies like I did.
