Tweak it a bit (probably less than you think) as Hitch has suggested, then let it cool and check it. Do this two or three times rather than trying to get it all in one hit. Otherwise you could overcook it and end up with a massive bow in the oppersite direction.
My preference if any, would be a slight bow in the opp. direction. This would aid stability on un-even ground; if it were laying on the ground rather than casters.
On another note, RE the drilling..
Do they not get you to do process plans before you actually make the stuff?.. this will help you decide in what order to do them, what you'll need, and how long it might take.
I do know that when i did my A level Des/Tech, that kind of thing would have come after, due to my ****-poor time managment skills
Anyway, now i have to quote on jobs, it's quite useful to be able to anticipate what's gonna be involved

Hi all,
I'm halfway through making an engine crane from 100x50x3mm steel box section. I have encountered a rather big problem (as i see it), when i welded two uprights onto a 100x50x3mm section about 1000mm long. Due to the heat of the weld, it has bent both sides up! Can anyone reccomend a way of bending them back level? i have asked about heating the section up, but apparently i would'nt be able to fully heat it to bend it!!!

If you're considering using a torch alone to heat, then you would need a rosebud using oxy/fuel (even oxygen/propane) in order to handle a large enough rosebud; acetylene rosebud sizes are pretty limited, but other fuel gases aren't. You might be able to rent the equipment.
Primary heat input on the area to be bent can be supplimented by placing the object's work area over a chip forge, or even a charcoal fire (old tire rim and a hair blower). Look up U.S. blacksmith sites for an endless supply of scrounger designs.
You can assemble a temporary brick forge structure around the areas to be heated and turn large sections up to yellow heat if desired by employing a home-built air/propane burner. Look up ABANA, and go to Ron Reil's web pages, which are posted there. From his burner pages, you'll find links to other web sites that feature very large burners indeed.
The previous suggestions are for use with heating to red hot or higher, for hammer work. A distorted piece can also be reformed by entrapment between three points that only allow expension to temporaryly warp the part toward a desired direction. A narrow slice of the piece is then heated to blue hot (when spit bounces off the heated surface, you're there). As the part moves, insert a wedge, and allow to cool. Repeat, slice by slice until you have what you want. This method can reshape warped parts very pricisely.
When anyone starts a conversation by telling you something can't be done, consider the source...as suspect.
That's why i have drilled the holes to have a piece of steel bolted into place so they don't move, whatever way i go about doing it.

The tutors do offer their expertise but is all health and safety rubbish, thats why i decided to weld at home.

I just want to take a second to disagree with this statement. Hopefully when you leave education the goal will be prototyping not production work. Single or small number builds not repetitious welding.
H&S is a really important part of that. I have seen some very very frightening things done in the name of money with little regard for health or safety. At some point you will stop learning about H&S and start acting on it. You will look at each job and see not just the technical difficulties but the inherent dangers associated with it. Not from a pen and paper, write it down point of view but a back of the head second nature action.
Risk assessments are really important and can be taught, the practical side can only ever be shown.

I uderstand that, but when i said health and safety rubbish, i meant it takes my place about 4 months just to be allowed to buy a welder and a few more weeks to buy every single bit of safety equipment! :S i work as a carpenter part time, so i can greatly understand the need for H&S, but sometimes its just a bit nuts.
