Help fitting universal wire feed assembly with euro torch

Well now, I'm just starting the same job on same welder. You could do me a favour by indicating where you came by the wire feed and euro socket combination, also did you go for 240v gas solenoid ? No post for a month.....hope you wired it right ! Keep posting.

To find a replacement wirefeed assembly, search on eBay. The die-cast alloy all-metal models are much better than the flimsy plastic versions, and they usually also include a Euro socket. For example:

The contactor is the large heavy-duty relay that enables welding power when the torch trigger switch is pressed. Usually the contacts close to feed AC mains power to the primary of the main welding transformer. The Cebora Pocket is unusual in that the contactor controls the high-current welding output from the secondary. To handle the high current, all three of the contact pairs are paralleled.
The operating coil of the contactor is supplied with 240v AC via a relay on the printed circuit board when the torch trigger is pressed. If you select a 240v mains gas solenoid, it can be wired in parallel with the contactor coil.

Hey @Muirhill121 - haha, I'm still alive!

I have mine all installed and working well. I was going to post some pics back this week and I can confirm all is working as expected. Actually MUCH better than expected!

The actual contraption I bought from Ebay - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/333894888198 - they all looked pretty similar to me so bought the one with best feedback and made sure it had all metal fittings (some have various plastic doo-dads.

As I say i will get pics and I can show you exactly the feeds I took.

Thats great, thanks a lot for your time. I have had this set for years and the old torch setup seems...well you know. The information 240v solenoid most helpful , I can see how to do that. Returning torch trigger lead (other is to old torch trigger lead) is to 'what ?'.. I'm guessing on this one, BUT can only be back to torch live feed ?

I can't imagine how I did not spot the wire feed and socket combination years ago. I shall continue with original intention of adding euro socket and a 240v gas valve (ordered uk) for now to get going, also familiarisation etc., but when feed combination arrives from China I will swap to that. I assume you have fabricated a suitable drop in box to suit depth required for socket support collar. Interestingly, I thought I might be alone in wishing to modify my aged transformer set, now I can see that is not the case. BRAVO etc.

What could be handy is the ability of the gas to come on just prior to the power and wire feed, and then to shut off again just after the power and wire feed stops.This can be done with a delay on and delay off timer. These timers are easy to get from any electrical wholesalers and are also 240v rated which will work nicely in this application. Anyway just a thought!

Yes. I would agree with that. I frequently use a Tig that has pre and variable post flow....vital for stainless. However, while I have considerable fabrication and mechanical ability.....less so with Electricals. This is a baby mig welder, only used when there is nothing else for it (except Gripfill ) . Mine just needs to work well when I occasionally need it, perhaps only an hour a year....but invaluable nonetheless. Simpler is best for my application.
YMMV !! I don't know much about Australia, but I would find a very hot day and an iffy wire feed to torch difficult to handle. I recently used some old but good railway sleepers (I was told Jarrah ) to make door frames, window seats and sills........I can see why you Aussies call it stink wood....VERY stong smell of ....CAT .?

I have received the wire drive and euro socket combination and it is now installed, I decided to have it a little higher, with the roller tension adjustment though a hole in top cover for simplicity. I notice that the assembly could be mounted upside- down, and run backwards....the tensioner and top roller hinge are interchangeable end for end to allow for fitting to other side of panel if desired.......but I couldn't decide if this might affect lubrication in any way ? Still, I can now adjust roller tension without removing the side panel. By comparison, this modification was well worth the effort for such low cost. Far better wire feed with easily replaced torch.
Makes me wonder how many similar transformer type MIGs might be begging for this little dodge to give them another life. Just need something to cut the internal sheet without a shower of red hot debris, some sort of nibbler maybe ?
