Biggest they do on 240v single phase is 200 Amps.

Just had another fettle with the welder - connected Live to L1 terminal, and Neutral to the terminal on the centre of the board as i was threatening to do a few posts back,(A 32A 240 supply via blue plug), Welder works a treat..??!! Between L1 and L2 is 240V and between L1 and L3 there is 415V (Although there is nothing connected to L2 and L3) Welds great, how's it working?

My guess for the 415 between L1 and L3 is that the transformer is making that from the 240. But I don't know what i'm talking about (again).
Still, who cares, it works.

The transformers are wired in a Y formation.

Each leg from the center is 0.577 of the phase-phase voltage. So for 220v it is 127v.

You have applied 220V to one leg. That is 2x the normal voltage. but you don't have the added voltage of the other 2 phases.

If it was wired for 308V, then each leg would be 220V. You might try that. Should be safer. you will still probably get 400v on the other phases.

In theory since you have only one phase and using 1/3 the transformer, you would be limited to 1/3 the output current. You will be using 2/3 of the rectifier.

You can get three-phase rotating converters. Basically they run a 3-phase motor on 2 phases witha capacitor startup on the third phase. Once it is going, the motor will generate the 3rd phase. You will need a hefty motor for the current.

A static 3-phase converter will not work. It provides a very low current on the 3rd phase, just enough to get it going.

I have run the 3-phase Lincoln here on a single phase and it worked great in initial tests (still need some parts.) It should be able to run 2/3 the power. I have a schematic, the controls and fans run off of only single phase, as long as that phase is included, it works.

If you can get a schematic, i can look to see if it can be rewired for single phase.

I currently have an inverter which runs my pillar drill and surface grinder. In laymans terms (and correct me if i'm wrong), this inverter sends two phases to the item to start to turn the motor, once the motor begins to turn, the third phase is generated, therefore 'fooling' the motor into thinking it has three phases. Therefore, for the bit of kit to work, it must be something that contains a motor - I presume if i plugged the welded in it would give two phases and not the third? I know you can get inverters with a motor contained within it, thereby giving a true three phase - to run a 260A welder it would be huge, and i don't really want to remortgage my house). (I'm flying by the seat of my pants with this discription!)

I once built a rotary converter for a mate of mine, your bang on paul its only really 2 phases + a neutral, 3 phase motors only realy require this, They work by shunting a 3 phase motor with cap useing the live and neutral, this starts the motor turning which then acts as a generator on the 3rd phase giving you 2 lives and a neutral smaler caps are then used across the phases to act as a bridge.The best built ones are only about 2/3 of the rated power of the motor.

Not much use to you i know but it kept my intrest for a day or so when i built it, I think a static converter does produce 3 true phases but dont quote me on that.

As si said oxfords have a simlar looking setup, Il have a lift of the plate to see if it sheds any light.
