Help - safe working load garage I-beam

I have a 4" x 2" extruded I-Beam that spans my 10ft wide garage. It is just over 1/4" metal thickness. Supported on brickwork each end.
I would line to know the safe working load I can lift with a chain lock hoist. Assume lifting in centre?

Can anyone help?

Going to need a lot more info...if you are just asking what the beam itself can carry that can be looked up easy enough (will give you a good idea).

But you need to also consider what it's sitting on...how it's sitting (on plate/on brick?)...is it on brick piers...or single skin wall...whats the wall condition?

I guess the question is what are you planning to lift with it...just an engine...or a whole car?

It's sitting on the brick buttresses either side of the garage. Plates have been welded at each end to prevent any twist. I have lifted 150kg without any deflection. Keen to know limitation though.

Years ago I built a garage and installed a lifting beam, 7" x 4" H section, over the 11ft/12ft span it was ok for about 1ton.

So a 4 x 2 inch section is probably equal to, not a lot.

I'd be incline to build a separate internal lifting frame.

Well I'm having no luck looking it up...4 inch is really thin though.

Steel usually deflects before it fails....you could measure the deflection the next time you use it I guess to check how it's moving.

Or just stick a builders prop under it if you are doing something really heavy.

It's a really substantial rsj suspect extruded as metal thickens towards central Web.
Hopefully someone has access to a calc. I suspect it will carry more than people think. Always good to know though. Lifting a jag v6 it didn't move a mm.

There’s a deflection load table on the web,iirc ,it’s approx 7mm/m.

What weight do you need to lift?

I would have thought 800 kgs in the middle. Maybe not 1 ton.

I'd be lifting the minimum and keeping an eye on deflection and all that.

In work in the past I've seen A frames where the crossbeam wasn't as substantial and I recall those being 500kg

Im thinking to lable it 250kg if there are no structural professors on the forum.

PS, I recall I lifted a whole terrapin racecar onto a trolley with it years ago

Last terripin I saw was when working with speedy Eddie on his hill climber.

Loved the idea of a single seater like that.

With point load in the middle of 250kg on it you will see 1mm sag thats a fixed point and resting 5mm


But wall construction and much more needs to be considered
