Help with buying a diesel road compressor for blasting.

Live on the coast, boats were commercial and pleasure. Preparation for antifoul paint, blasting off barnacles etc.

Did anything that was offered and I think he was busy.

Masonry brick/stone, timber windows, wraught iron, cars, bikes, trucks,

Thing needs a new compressor and doesn't/can't spend on it.

Won't sell it I asked.

I had a good chat today with a guy who gave a good insight into buying a used diesel unit.

I have heard of a guy today, semi locally to me who has a Compair C50.. he is buying a new unit.

I must investigate tomorrow.

That would work well for me.

Regarding nozzle size - think of it this way. Instead of a blasting nozzle to clean it you are using a black marker to colour it in. A 3mm tip will take forever but with a 6mm you'll go twice as quick. On a large surface a 6mm would be slow but a 8mm (5/16) will be a 1/3rd quicker.

And I guess your air could be considered your ink supply for the markers. You'll not need much ink for a 3mm marker but for a 8mm you'll need lots of ink, hence a bigger compressor.

In my opinion I would start out with the 100cfm unit. If the business doesn't pan out it will be easier to sell on than a screw compressor. Plus with the cost of electricity the road compressor might be cheaper to run if you can run it on green diesel!

Sure, I understand rhe whole business of tip size vs productivity.

It's just hard to know right what is reasonable and makes commercial sense. Although I have gotten some good pointers above.

Regarding screw vs diesel. I spoke to a guy who sells new diesel compressors and not electric screws. He still said screws are a pit 20% cheaper to run here in Ireland.

I might have a line on a 175 cfm Roadie.. which could be good.

388 cfm on 10hp my 90cfm has a 20 hp engine on it

Good evening all.

Quick update. Over the weekend I viewed what I think was a 1992 Compair 300 cfm unit with a 4 cylinder perkins diesel.

I say "think" because there was very limited information. In the grand scheme of things it was totally unsuitable because of its price and condition. It needed total overhaul both cosmetically and mechanically if you were to rely on it for commerce.

One thing it did make me realise though, was that I probably shouldn't be using a road unit to start off as it will be a bit loud for my workshop and small industrial estate. Perhaps this was extra loud because it was so old.

And with the above in mind I went to view this 3 phase 77CFM @7 BAR screw compressor.

It seems cheap for what it is (with dryer etc) but I think that is partly down to the fact that it is quite big and also 3 phase.

I like it, looks honest. When I got there to view it, it had been disconnected from the mains and so I couldn't run it. When the guy connected it up it wouldn't build pressure...for some reason.

In its defence though, there was a bit of built up pressure when I got there, so it has been working prior.


The "compressor engineer" will be there on Thursday to reconnect it.. so I can then view it and test the air output to see if there is any oil.

Cab anybody please feel free to offer me tests to perform on the compressor when it's running. I have been told to put a cloth up against the air output to see if there is much oil coming out.

If there is, it will need work

The sellers reason for sale is that its too big for his workshop, which is a 2 lift car repair business. To be fair, when I got there, there was a smaller compressor there being used.

I just need to be sure it works as expected.

Oh, I forgot.

The diesel unit was asking €5000 and the 3 phase screw €1900.

The screw seems decent value at that I think. Provided it holds up.

Here is the manual for the Ceccato. Somebody said on YouTube that they are some other brands internals. I can't remember. Maybe compair.

I've no experience with atlas ones but I suppose they would be similar.

I just called Ceccato and they said a recommended overhaul of air end at 25k hours.. but it will do a lot more....

I think I will go for this and schedule in an overhaul over the next 12 months or.

Yea seems very high for sure.
