No need to actually pull the seal. Mine are still in there, just leak.

When i took out the old half shaft, it was worn where the seal would be. I figured the seal had probably died and twisted up or somthing.

When i took it apart, it looked fine - may have been legacy damage from years before - who knows. But thats why i took it apart.
