Hobart cyber tig 300 ac dc

Hi im pritty new to this so please bare with me . i have just aquired a hobart cybertig 300 acdc tig welder and was wandering what settings or general settings it should be on to weld alloy as ive always wanted to try . I have a lot of experiance in mig welding but i appreciate tig is a total different ball game all togeather . So i need to start from scratch . 1 what settings for witch metals 2. What amps and rod size . 3. What gas do i use for welding alloy ? I have aron universal for my mig welders would this do or do i have to rent nother bottle ? Any info most welcome .

The Miller TIG calculator will tell you the current, tungsten size, gas flow and shroud.

you need pure argon or Ar/He for TIG. Anything else will contaminate the tungsten.

does any body know what volt light bulbs are in this Hobart cyber tig as the ones that are in are missing or blown . the one i removed just appeared to have U,S,A stamped on it . any help will be most appreciated . I'm going to take the sides and top off and blow all the dust out that's accumulated over the years out of it before i power it up for the first time . is there any thing i should be careful of ? cheers

Hard to say, those old Hobart machines you need to order reprint manual.

The newer ones say 28V. Maybe you could measure the voltage on the socket.

hi thanks for that , ive actually managed to find some old 24v bulbs in an old cabinate at work and they seem to fit fine . chees

i managed to find time to get the sides off the old Hobart and change its 415v plug for a more up to date one . needless to say they must have been 30 years of dust and crap inside the machine , but it looks as good as new now after the airline had blown it out , i was was even more surprised that it powered up faultlessly .

what settings

hi again now that my Hobart cyber tig seems to be in working order , i was wandering what settings it should be set at for welding alloy . please bare in mind that I've never ever used a tig before , so any info would be nice , what is all the high frequency for and low frequency , slope etc , do i have to ball end my tungsten's on this machine as it is old ? its all new so i have to learn from the start , the basics would be a good place to start . i also have a friend who needs some magnesium welding do i need special rods for that ? i wont be doing that till i feel competent enough though and i feel they will probably be days of practise ahead .

The link that Shenion posted... at the left of the page there's a link to their 'tig welding tech tips' and under 'resources' (top of page) there's a bunch more articles covering general set up, torch and filler angles, HF start/continuous HF etc.

Magnesium is welded with AC like aluminium but you need magnesium filler which is STUPIDLY expensive!

Don't you need to weld magnesium in a sealed chamber full of argon?

Magnesium is what they used to make flash bulbs out of.

As for settings, post a better pic of the controls. I don't thing that hobart is variable-frequency. So would use a balled tungsten on AC.

On the Miller TIG Resources pages ther is a TIG calculator. That will give you the gas flow, tungsten size and current needed for various metals.

A chunk of mag is quite hard to ignite as it's such a good conductor of heat. Swarf/mag ribbon etc on the other hand...

It's different but pretty similar to welding aluminium, clean up any swarf before striking an arc and keep the end of the filler within the gas shield and fire risk is no different to welding anything else. Worth putting away that water fire extinguisher and replacing with a bucket of sand/class D fire extinguisher though!

thanks that's worth knowing , its just an old danarm chainsaw casing that needs welding probably about 2mm thick so will only need one rod i would say .

tungstens

hii again what kind of tungstens will te hobart need as they seem to be so many different types with colour coding . is they just a basic sort it needs to do everything , alloy stainless etc or will it require different tungstens for different metals ? sorry to go on asking loads of questions but it is all very new to me and i would like some knowledge before i start . regards Richard . also my low pulse bulb isn't coming on , i think its low pulse without actually looking again at it . is this normal or will they be a fault with the machine ?

Miller has a electrode selection guide, here.

Check ebay. I picked up an assortment on ebay. A seller took 6 different boxes of electrodes and made up assortments of sizes and the most common types.

I have Thoriated for DC and pure tungsten for AC. Have not had a chance to try any others.

A large picture of the white area might be more useful than each control on its own.

i know but you wont be able to read what the controls are if i take a photo of the whole white part , its a bloody big machine about 1 metre wide by over a metre tall . to get them all in i would have to stand back thus not been able to read the controls . they is a picture of the tig at the first post on page one .

Yes, but it will show the graph and where the controls point to it.

Most seem self explanatory. Looks like a real advanced machine in its day.
