as Gaz has said belt drive compressors are generally quieter than direct drive ones. I replaced my direct drive one with a belt drive one. mine is just in my garage, as I live on a busy road, its just background noise when its working as some of the vehicles driving on the road are noisier

I have 2 one of ech and the belt driven is way quieter that get turned on of a evening
I've got lovely neighbours.. I also have a lovely old compressor. It's virtually a stationary engine so the noise it makes is much more bearable than a modern one. Dont underestimate the benefits of a decent inlet and filter for controlling the din.

Quiet(er) ones are rotary screw compressors, fairly expensive and high maiantenance for home use though some us them to good effect - if you can drop on a bargain. Hydrovane are the popular "home" sized ones.
Next in the quiet scale would probably be belt driven, a fair chunk quieter than direct drive and fairly simple in terms of maintenance, plenty to choose from and relatively cheap (compared to rotary screw) - though they are far from "silent". A "doghouse " built outside and air pipe plumbed in would be a good compromise, I'd imagine once enclosed the noise should be fairly minimal unless you neighbours are very close, though you can design in noise reducing features /insulate it. I think there have been some threads on here ref the noise reducing enclosures.

I was thinking a box is a possibility, someone else told me I could bury it in the floor and put wood over the top of it doesn't sound right to me, I've looked at Clarke shh compressors they look good but expensive I'd like either a 100 or 150 litre ideally.

Air guns, I presume you mean PCP's. IIRC you need to fill to around 180bar for multi shot. Unless my memory fails me.

I switched to a Hydrovane from a belt driven piston pump. The noise difference is huge, you can stand next to it and have a chat when it's running. Sensible priced Hydrovanes do come up but you have to be in the right place. If you get one that's running well, change the oil/filters it will last a home user a lifetime as long as you follow the usage guidelines and with a vane compressor that means you need to run it long enough to get up to temperature and disperse any moisture so no ideally suited to running for a few minutes then stopping
