Funds are tight so I was thinking about single skin then stud and board on the inside.
I know it won't be as good though

Hi. No we didn’t fill the cavity in the garage - rest of the extension obviously did. It’s a tiled roof with building membrane under So I use the space above the ceiling joists for storage.

Be interested if you have compares prices - if you’re doing it yourself I wouldn’t have imagined a massive difference in material cost between inner block and board / studding? I had to buy a few sheets of OSB (see my other thread on “temporary” decking - which is still in place !!) and I got a shock how much sheet materials are. You’ll need a fair number to line the inside.

But I guess you would gain some on the inner dimension so 6 of one ...

For stuff like this I can wholeheartedly recommend Sketchup. It is very (very) easy to pick up thoguh the simplicity does get in the way for complex stuff. I did my shed with it. Right down to the last brick...

I seem to remember that it was an online program many many moons ago? I could of course be thinking of something completely different though

A VERY good friend of mine has a sister who is 6 mths off training /being certified as an architect , I can ask would she like it as a ' project ' if you like .

Well i have sketch up on the laptop and still trying to use it. I designed a big fish tank/room once years ago. its more complex i think from then after new updates.

So

Girder will carry max 1.5 ton. it can be shortened if need be

Front door, i know i said one single door, sorry i meant as in one opening. door plan is a four panel folding type on rollers/support. I made a 12 foot wide work pound gate that way in 4 foot sections with sprung jockey wheel support.

Yes i was planning on adding pillars, atleast two down each side and one at the back wall.

Roof trusses i am not up on but i have looked at a few designs and like the one i did in my sketch for extra height. I need to look into this more and what size timber to use.


Oh yes the breeze blocks, i meant the dense concrete blocks, i just call them breeze blocks aswell.. Not the lightweight ones. And idea to line it with Celotex type boards is i can get it half price from a supplier near me at £15 a board as they re slight damaged. Saves on building twin wall if its built well enough..

I need to go read more again so i can reply to more posts as forgot now lol.

Thanks for the advice and ideas. wish i was still in the demolition job as i could of got all i need from that job, steel, bricks etc etc dirt cheap. ah well.

Anyway. that would be great for her an I. No harm in asking her. I just need either finished drawing for me to work on how i want it or plans for the Planning permission if she can do that.

Thats not actually a bad idea, if the beam is to lift 1.5 ton, over that length the beam its selfwill be quite a size, and the structure to support it quite substansial. Suspect a building inspector might insit on a "formal design" with calculations.

With the bridge crame, you could support the side runners with multiple verticals bolted to the walls, to your own design.

If have some raised leg truss drawings for my barn conversion, that will comply with building regs, I will pm them to you

Ah "bridge crane" that's what it's called.

Toying with the idea of retrofitting but needs a decent ceiling height or lighting would be a nightmare.

compared to what cost it would cost you to get that single beam past thats going to be built into the structure probably a lot less as you would need a structural engineer plans to be also submitted to the council that could easily fail your original design build due to it
as the beamwork could fail and pull the rest down with it

that would mean you would need to over engineer its single beam construction the failure point is at your door area

I tell you what, if i give a rough sketch/plan of what i want to a person in this line of work to draw plans for me to build from what would that cost, who would i need to ask do that for me ?

Then i think for me it would be best to go from there onto the Planning then build regs.

Steer away from architects, they are pricey, what you need is a planning technician, or similar. Ask around most of your small builders will have a man they use. Or go on your local planning portal, and search through the applications, get some names, from the drswings. Or have a good look, and do your own, its not that difficult. Hand drawing is quite acceptable.

But before you spend money, do a pre planning application, they will say yea or nay and point you down the right road, its only about 20 quid, few drawings, graph paper, site plan bit of a description, and get their nod.

also remember anything built into the structure stays with the structure

building regs mostly want to see calculations for stuff that you intend to use extra, you quote its going to lift something with the building structure they will need calculations and ask for 10 percent extra

the things that can be removed and built else where is handy when you come to move the only thing that affects is your flooring strength not your structure of the building only the extra legs effect the structure

This was the sort of thing I was thinking:

I was going to have the long beams on top of the wall so the shorter moving beam would be, err, shorter.

I appreciate the dollies are not fully sketched out (and it might twist) but it's just a sketch. Also it's not really the right way up but I am a bodger and it would work for me. Planning Enforcement made me lower the roof so it was a no go. I might try and be cheeky, raise the roof (!) and stick one in there before I become too decrepit to lift anything.

The beams would be inside the roof supports.

In reality how often are most of lifting large things....that an engine hoist cant manage, not all to often, when I raced power boats, when I was young, we origionally lifted the engine off using two 8x2 screwed together, and an acro jack either side of the boat. eventually built a 2 A frame gantry, that came apart for easy storage. Used to lift a 85 hp outboard off. Struggled at the 200hp one though.
