Horse head

So after finishing my horse sculpture I felt a bit lost, I have no idea why cause I've got loads on but I enjoyed making it so much I think it's going to take something special to top it. I've decided to start creating pieces that I can sell/show independently and this is my first go. It looks fairly similar to the first horse but I went for an annoyed look.

This is where I'm up to now, the face is pretty much done and I'm now looking to work on the neck and base.

I'm not sure whether to make the neck solid like the head or keep it like it is with added detail. At least I'm not under any pressure so I'll just experiment a bit

Nice work.
I think it is a great idea to keep plugging away on personal projects even when busy on commissions.
I find I get frustrated constantly working on other people's ideas. I keep promising to make myself take a day a week to make my own stuff and rarely get it done.

Tell me about it, it's strange that although I'm busy doing different interesting jobs I still have a constant urge to do my own things. I've also been saying for ages that I want to take time every week to do something I want to do but I struggle to round to it. This is a start!

Good work Mr P. Ref the neck, looking at the pic in the background of the white horse there is little detail to the horses neck. The main (no pun intended!) thing that stands out is the horses neck muscle so maybe the steel rods bunched together to give impression of the muscle sinews/fibers.
Ref the "time for your own projects" I think you are self employed? and as such don't see things like the weekend as a break from work. I think that goes for a lot of the chaps and lasses on here that are self employed. Would not want to work self employed my self but suites some.

Thanks Kevin! It's got a cool character which I love. Not sure I like it more than the first but there are bits I prefer. My works is always better the more times I do it, that's why I made this, I wanted to see if I could create another piece with a similar character and see if I've remembered anything. I like working out little cheats which save time and improve things so if I have to create more I can be more efficient.

Funny you mention the finish cause I had a rep in on Thursday, who contacted me about finishing. He sells a product from New Zealand which uses nano technologies. It's supposed to be a new technology as far as coating are concerned and looks amazing!! There is a super clear coat which actually bonds to the steel rather than coating it as a layer (if that makes sense) he's given me some samples which I intend to test. There are also some amazing patinas which can be applied and then protected by the clear coat. They've had some beer taps salt water tested 1100 hours which is supposed to be like 10-12 years in real time. Please don't quote me word for word as I might not be 100 % accurate but it seems amazing and I think would be awesome for a few of us on here! I will keep you posted.

I'm feeling lost by not having time to devote to my own ideas as well.. I've got tennis elbow so my work is limited to what I can do right now. so at the moment just doing the bare minimum to keep myself afloat. This creative urge thing is a need not a frivolity!!

So I've brought the head home to let it age gracefully and am loving the transformation happening before my eyes. I know a few members, Chunko' being the one that comes to mind let their sculptures rust and then coat them with various things, I've acquired a nano coating which is supposed to be excellent on patinas but not sure how to prepare the steel to keep the rusty look?

The last three photos were taken while wet and I love the glossy look, I'd really like to have look like that as a finished piece.
