did you clean it with any thing before leaving it outside?

obviously due to welding and grinding but the face has gone a lovely colour compared to the mane wich has hardly changed? or was thaton purpose?

The face was ground down after welding so raw steel where as the mane was 6mm bar so still has a slight coating which stops its from rusting the same way, I might need to add a bit of acid to it or I've thought about powder coating the whole thing with a rusty effect, I dont want to do that but I dont want inconsistency. This is out of my comfort zone...

Sure, I just want to find out what technique guys use when they coat rusty spulptures, as from what I understand you have to clean off the rust and then cost it.

Fabulous work, the patina forming is gorgeous and adds lots of texture to it. I prefer the non-gloss look personally but I'd be pretty damn chuffed with either Am very envious of your talents!

Thank you very much!! It's interesting watching it go through different stages, photographs don't do it justice. But I like all the various stages. Yea I love it and still find it hard to believe I actually made it!

Shaun,I think the last 3 pics are fantastic,even the mane.
If it was mine I would give it a few coats of yacht varnish as it is . I'm sure that's what our bearded wonder chunko would do.
Was there scale left on the bar you used for the mane ? I've noticed with the antiquing fluid I use for colour ,I have to grind / sand back to bare steel

Thanks Kevin! I'm keen to try this nano coating I've got, its supposed to be the business but is a new tech so not much known about it yet. Re 6mm bars I'm not sure because with 8,10 etc they have an apparent scale that flakes off when rolled or bent, the 6mm doesnt and I couldnt see i thats why I just left it but if all else fails Ill have it all shot blast and then start again...

If you want 8m bar without the millscale you can but brught finish which is pricey and harder to bend or ask for it 'off the coil' dead cheap and has no mill scale also easy to bend.
You can accelerate the rusting process on the scale version using Ammonium Chloride, you have to leave it for a good few weeks so the mill scale flakes off with the first bloom of rust,
