I'd crack on with that then. Use the tinkering time wiring and putting bracketry together.

Simplest and easiest would be a direct system, connected to the immersion that you could use a changeover switch to flip between solar and mains. But better would be a grid tied system that feeds into the holiday let with excess feeding the water cylinder and, if that's hot, the hot tub.

Would be an investment but could be done relatively cheaply with second hand parts.

its not something i would use when i can gain hot water with very little wood burn

rocket stove version tank above not a good thing as you want it to last

these are 50-60 gallons

another option but takes ages to heat up

i will post the snorkal stove so you can see it aluminium made

they do smoke and ash do come out of them at the top which can go into the hot tub water when you take the lid off

however its one of the best heaters to modulate the temp while your in the hot tub its why ive mentioned it ( time spent in it after heating the water to temp )

I think my issue is that i have no idea where to start with it so i faff with other stuff.

I've put up a couple of grid tie setups now, it's pretty straight forward, especially if you have a tin roof they can go on. Happy to give a few pointers if I can, there was a recent thread on here regarding a DIY setup, brewdexta did one iirc

Regarding performance, assuming zero own consumption, you could expect above~100kWh per month per kw of panels from April to August So, ~3.3kwh per day. Say you put in 2kW of panels, that would be 6.5kWh/day. That would be the equivalent of running the 2kW immersion for 3.3hours.

Enough to maintain temperature? Probably not! I've no idea how lossy they are but I imagine lots!

As an aside, I stayed in a place with a wood fired hot tub last year. We used it but the novelty wore off quickly. What was noteworthy was just how much ash fell down into the tub. I tried my best to run the fire hot but inevitably some front escapes the chimney and some of that falls in. The water would definitely need to be changed after every customer.

Customers in control of a fire next to the tub would guarantee having to change the water every go. Maybe you have to either way.

Your supposed to change the water and clean at each changeover! Thats my understanding* anyway with hot tubs dedicated to each cottage.

If you have panels one ofthese puts excess into immersion. On mine, it adds to emersion first, then heat store tank. You can get the manual on line spells out the options. Think @brewdexta found similar options

Interesting, a colleague at work is just installing solar and only last week I recommended him to buy a solar diverter such as the Eddi. They haven't turned their hot tub on for a year, but he doesn't think he can get away with a bitt from cable from the diverter to the hot tub.... Fair enough, call it a cold plunge pool then

solar isnt going to be much good in winter for the pool

and to be honest here if im fitting solar its going direct to the house water or battery bank

i dont see the point in wasting piping to the hot tub when i can use a wood stove and a bit of piping to it then it can be used in all weathers

There are a few "diverter" competitors. I quite like the solic200, simplest of the bunch and the ones I have seem to just work. You can get any diverter to cascade to second, third, etc. loads with the addition of a simple relay. However, the Eddi (or maybe immersun?) Does have the ability to run two units in tandem if you have an array much larger than 3kw. I'd like to try the "MK2 PV router" but have yet to find the need. Looks basic, well made and inexpensive.

Here’s one I made up for my old man a while back. It’s a permanent fixture in a blockwork tub but a similar arrangement could be done that is demountable. Aluminium so quite light to move around by hand.

for the boiler it depends on what your after downdraft is the best option

remember downdraft run at 90% efficent compared to a wood stove that runs at 60%

I've made one of the MK2 pv diverter kits. Robin is very good to deal with and will tailor a system to your needs. I wanted a radio controlled oil filled radiator which he was happy to spec for me.

I've assembled the electronics just need to calibrate and wire up the two boxes.

Would have been finished this winter but I realised I needed to move some panels around to get any sun when it's low in the sky so that has taken priority
