How does a compressor work? Can I convert an aldi to belt drive?

Right - had a good read of the reviews and Q&As on that page, and I think the wolf is the answer.

£50 for me old (actually new) Aldi one, a couple of hundred "contribution" from not paying the truck loan next month, and we're in business

and I thought my aldi compressor was just noisy because of where it was placed. I dont have space for a bigger compressor, so its got me thinking about doing a belt drive conversion. looking at belt drive air pumps they seem to run much slower than direct drive compressors, so is the reduction in speed of the air pump the main reason why the compressors are quieter, or is it the belt drive arrangement.

or I guess I could get one of these and use this with the existing motor. what could possibly go wrong as long as I dont modify the receiver of my compressor

Went to dinner and I explained the £50 back for the old compressor, and the £230 from not paying the truck loan next month, and she said "it's your money - if you think it's covered then go for it"
So ordered the Wolf 90/3HP tonight. Thanks for the advice, all, and I'll post a review when I get it.

Oh, and does anyone want to buy an Aldi 2HP compressor or a 2006 Mitsi L200?

Aye - that's what I was thinking when I started this thread, but now I've concluded that I'd be best replacing it entirely.

No the motor is bespoke for the direct drive unit.
most of the noise on a direct drive is from the motor whipping the piston up and down at 3000rpm and the resultant vibration, I changed the pump on my portable unit from 3000 rpm to a 1400 rpm, still direct drive but twice the piston size pump, it doesnt build air any faster, but it is a LOT less than half the noise volume.
The wife used to complain about the noise from the compressor 70ft away in the bedroom late at night (it is switched on 24/7 ) , now it is barely discernible the other side of the first door.

Then I see the one coming to Aldi this weekend. 3hp and 50 ltr albeit direct drive, and with 3 year warranty.

It's exactly half the price of the Clarke, so why wouldn't I go with the Aldi version (assuming noise isn't an issue)

It's used for the usual air tools and a 30 amp plasma cutter.

Not at all, mate.

Just checked the Aldi site and, although these compressors are still cheap, Aldi have definitely bumped the prices up.

My Aldi 24L compressor went last night to a guy who responded to the gumtree ad. I paid £65 for it six months ago and he was happy to pay £70 for it!
Why? Because it's going on sale next month for £110 and he gets it £40 cheaper with 2.5 years warranty left.

I've not seen them selling 50L units before but another £60 for a larger tank seems steep.

Anyways - my 24L one was fine for the plasma cutter, but the noise when it kicked in after ~20 seconds of cutting really started to grate. At least if you get a 50L one you should get longer runs.

As for tools, it wouldn't drive an impact wrench or a cutoff tool...

The 24litre aldi compressor is a single cylinder the newer 50l is a vee twin, and should be a superior machine.....can always take it back if its too noisy etc

So I bought the unit recommended by @mr migwire and so far it seems excellent value for money.

another nice video mate, I recon the direct drive V twin aldi job is going to be hellish noisy compared to these belt drive units,

I have a 50l comp the same as he aldi one now on offer, it's branded as ryhas though. Don't think its any louder than the 25 Litre units, fills up much faster and lasts longer. I have a thread about making a sound booth for it which shows all the noise levels for it
