It is necessary to stratify 100 small seeds, the size of a hungry louse. Hard labor!
The cherry tree planted last year has blossom.

I sprinkled my tiny celery seeds on top of sieved growth medium, cling filmed it over ,then put them in the freezer for two days , then the fridge for 24 hrs. , then removed the film , gave a misting spray and put them on a bright but not sunny window cill with perforated film & half a sheet of white paper over them . Checking daily and as soon as I saw evidence of sprouting removed the film & paper then grew them on to an inch or so long before individually potting them upIt is necessary to stratify 100 small seeds, the size of a hungry louse. Gutted, I took 3 banana plants in from the garden last autumn and have been keeping them growing in the house overwinter, they have been doing great. They went back out to the garden last week, still in pots, no frosts were forecast but we got one. Half the leaves now killed off. Very peed off with myself.
Have you got any photos of these tubes in use?I suspect we will have late May frosts this year if the four week delay in planting / sowing weather is any thing to go by . I'd hang on to chitted spuds in the glasshouse too for another week before planting in slightly deeper than usual trenches . The spuds being in a bit deeper will help as well if we get a scorcher later on , they will soon catch up as will kost other crops .
I'm thinking of setting up 130 of my bottomless seed growing tubes and starting my flyaway carrots off..... one seed per tube in the glasshouse as they don't germinate well if the soil is much below 12 oC last years carrot crop was terrible , over half were sown direct at normal time and the remainder were sown a fortnight later the earlier sowings failed dismally .
The surface roots also kill rotary engine driven grass cutter blades & crank shafts . A two day old £380 ish machine killed by my clod of a 17 yr old son in 1994 when despite me telling him to not cut in the the orchard with the 42 inch self propelled Mountfield he did .Take off now and nuke it from orbit. Cherry trees are the root shooting, patio lifting embodiment of the Devil!
Photos or video of all that would be great...Yes.
Though later today I'll do a set from start to finish for those interested .
If you can get any freecycle or otherwise used 44 mm ID used ( or new sink waste pipe ) start collecting .
I cut it in 78 mm lengths on the band saw , made an expanding arbor so I can face one end off on my lathe , did 200 plus in one go then reset the arbor up and locked the carriage to part off at 75 mm . Used a ground to shape end of a nine inch long triangular file as a gouge to round off the turned edges as they are razor sharp .
To temporarily plug the bottom of the tubes I used old gym exercise mats 10 mm or so thick and cut them out of strips using a 45mm hole saw , the drill of the hole saw makes a neat 6 mm hole just where it's needed for drainage . Made some simple plungers to set the bung to the bottom of the tubes and alsu to use it to push up a ready for planting out seedling from the bottom end then remove th bung and plant in a prepared tubular hole .
I took the trouble to get all th tubes tot he same height so it's easy to stack seed trays of 33 tubes . cut a plastic sheet up to precisely fit the seed trays as they don't stand up well due to the ridged bottom of the trays .
It might seem a lot of faff but it works well almost every time , made simple vacuum a seed suction device out of an aquarium pump in a sealed up Tupperware box so I can pick up one carrot sed or any other small seed at a time & place it inthe midddle of dibbed hole a filled seed tube . Said hole then has a pinch of fine crumb vermiculite over the seed to allow constant moisture on the seed and natural IR & UV light penetration .
At what point should sour cherries be picked, and what to do with them?
