Do it now .
Sprout through in a glasshouse or cling film covered tub ( don't let them get too hot ) then pot up in two's in a 25 litre bucket /tub that has drain holes in the base sides and water well each night, giving liquid feed every three days .
Place tubs in a full sun position , grow the squashes up some pig wire / stock wire fence ,wrapped in a three foot dia tube around the tub,
As the squash grow . feed the tendrils into the wire so you get an even dispersal around the wire circumference . IIt makes picking the fruits easy and allows you to slip big ones in to ladies pop sock nylons to tie to the wire.
I once "improved" my mother's lawn by knocking over the bucket of creosote when doing the fence as a kid.Either it was the creosote runoff where I had the pub fence laid on trestles, or where I tipped about 10L of exhausted citric acid solution on to the "will one day be a patio" area. Whatever kills the weeds a treat as evidenced by the burnt black bits:
SWMBO always complains if I buy compost from Lidl, says it's "got bits in". She only does hanging baskets. I bought 6 20L bags the other day for my stuff.
Sat here this morning on the patio with a decent black coffee and the cat, very pleasant. Trying to get this latest compost in the small pots and I'm having to sift through it. Decided to put through a 6mm sieve. Loads of solid lumps! All sieved and back in the bag. Only another 5 sacks to do!
we get field mice around here , dont come in at all untill winter, and then hibernate in loft , not a problem untill the rats from over the road get hungryIs there a good way to discourage mice? I've just seen one in the garden, and I'd rather like to make sure that it doesn't get into the house, especially now the weather is nice and I want to have the door open.
Note that I can barely look after myself, so please don't suggest getting a cat. There is one that visits and leaves a calling-card in various parts of the garden. I've been scooping that up and throwing into a far corner of the flower bed, which was close to where I saw the mouse so that doesn't put it off. Writing this, though, does remind me that I've got some strawberries coming up near there, so I'll have to start throwing it somewhere else.

@DAPPH for the butternut squash, two per container you say, I have 5 of these blue and two grey. The greys had biodegradable hydraulic oil in, the blues water treatment chemicals. Whatever I use will be well cleaned & rinsed of course.
The question is do I go "tall" as in blue with the top cut off, or grey, again handle bit cut off which will be sort of lower/flatter?
